Assistant Professor, Digital Media

The School of Visual Arts and Design (SVAD), College of Arts and Humanities, University of Central Florida seeks an assistant professor for teaching and research in Digital Media. This is a nine-month, tenure-track position, the duties of which include teaching, research, and service. Teaching and research responsibilities include contributing to the mission of Digital Media in appropriate areas of scholarship. Appropriate specialization explores the edge of interactive media experience and incorporates emerging technologies relating to areas such as, but not limited to, human-computer interaction, data visualization, audio and haptic design, and ethical and inclusive interactive media design. SVAD Digital Media faculty actively collaborate with UCF’s Institute for Simulation and Training. In addition, faculty have an active role in UCF’s Center for Emerging Media located in downtown Orlando. Digital Media faculty conduct creative research in areas related to interactive entertainment and learning (e.g., online; computer, mobile, and console-based computer games; virtual worlds; and military simulation) and develop new techniques, content and applications in support of the arts and cultural heritage preservation.

UCF offers undergraduate B.F.A. and B.A. degrees as well as M.F.A and M.A. degrees. The School of Visual Arts and Design has approximately 2,700 majors across four areas that include architecture, digital media, film, and studio arts.

The school encourages multidisciplinary collaborations that explore new combinations of story, imagery, sound, and interaction, as well as technical development and critique. Faculty members are expected to actively pursue and obtain external funding and to develop projects that achieve peer reviewed recognition for innovation and excellence.

The position has an anticipated start date of August 2015, pending the availability of funding.

The successful applicant will be a dynamic creative professional who will drive academic, practical and research activities in immersive engagement of the human senses as it relates to emerging technologies, and in developing the next generation of interactive media industry professionals. This position carries an expectation to submit successful funding proposals for interactive media research.

 

Position Minimum Qualifications

1. A terminal degree in Digital Media or a related field from an accredited institution with emphasis in interactive digital media including modern theory and practice.

 2. Evidence of competence using and teaching current technology.

 3. Effective communication skills.

 4. Promising path toward quality research, creative projects and publication record.

 5. College-level teaching experience required.

 

Preferences

1. Resourceful, collaborative, multi-talented conceptual artist/maker who explores interactive technology with significant scholarly accomplishments and successful applied research funding.

 2. Drives media innovation with passionate exploration of new and emerging interactive technologies including embedded systems.

 3. Shows the value of ethics, diversity and inclusion in media design by creating and celebrating meaningful experiences for diverse learners.

 4. Demonstrates excellent organization and communication skills.

 5. Three years of full-time teaching experience in a diverse digital media program at an accredited institution of higher education designing and delivering face-to-face, mixed-mode, and online courses ranging from lower-division through graduate-level is desired.
