Assistant Professor of 3D Computer Graphics

The University of the Arts seeks an Assistant Professor to teach 3D Computer Graphics in both the BFA in Animation and the BFA in Design, Art & Technology programs, in the College of Art, Media and Design for a multi-year/non-tenure track faculty position.

The successful candidate will be able to teach courses in 3D computer animation, 3D game art, and virtual environments from introductory to advanced levels. The ability to teach courses in Game Design, Interaction Design, Physical Computing and 2D Animation are desirable. Knowledge of the following software is required/desired:

  • Maya (required)
  • ZBrush or Mudbox
  • Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (After Effects, Premiere, Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Unity Game Engine

We are also interested in candidates who have experience with motion capture systems.

Preference will be given to candidates whose practice expands animation and/or gaming boundaries and demonstrates innovation across these rapidly changing disciplines. A strong record of professional achievement, a comprehensive grasp of the history of animation, media, technology and contemporary debates, as well as an interest in collaborative and interdisciplinary curricular initiatives are desired.

In recognition of the University’s Academic and Strategic Plans and the recommendations that support a commitment to the spirit of experimentation and invention in the education of young artists and designers, the new Assistant Professor will be expected to instruct within the BFA programs with artistic and academic innovation. The hallmarks of the Academic and Strategic Plans include greater opportunity for collaborative learning and encouragement of our faculty and students to question the conventions and boundaries that underpin disciplinary traditions.

The full time teaching load is 18 credits, typically six courses per year (3/3). Assistant Professors begin with a 3-year renewable contract. In addition to teaching, full-time faculty are expected to maintain a professional art or commercial practice, serve on university committees, advise students, and participate in curriculum development and other departmental activities.

Located prominently on the Avenue of the Arts in Center City Philadelphia, the University of the Arts is one of the oldest and largest comprehensive private institutions of higher education devoted to the arts in the United States. Its undergraduate and graduate programs prepare students for more than 150 professional career paths in the visual, performing, media, design and communication arts, and related fields. The combined enrollment for the College of Art, Media and Design is approximately 1200 students, with the BFA Animation program currently at 90 undergraduates. The Animation curriculum is designed to encourage students to refine their creative vision while also developing solid technical competencies, which will serve them well in whatever aspect of animation they choose.

Qualifications:
An MFA in Animation, Game Art or a related area, minimum three years college-level teaching experience beyond graduate school, commitment to teaching, and/or six years professional practice in a specific area of 3D computer graphics such as animation and/or game design.

Video/new media work should include a still and a link to a website or blog url. Demo reels should be 3 minutes or less, with links to full-length works included. In all cases please note what your role in a particular example was, whether primary creator, production artist, or director, etc.
