Unix Systems Administrator II

Description

The Unix Systems Administrator is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and upgrade of Unix hardware and software as a member of the Systems Operations team.

Responsibilities:


  • Design and maintain production backup infrastructure and participate in disaster recovery planning.
  • Implements and documents system enhancements that will improve the reliability and performance of the system.
  • Alert management to potential problems and respond to emergency events.
  • Assists in the design, deployment and maintenance of all Unix-based systems for Lucasfilm companies.
  • Acts as a liaison for Lucasfilm with outside systems vendors to obtain service and support for Unix systems.
  • Lead the upgrade, maintenance and administration of all production network backup systems in a heterogeneous client/server environment.
  • Provide backup system tuning and capacity planning to accommodate all corporate Microsoft and UNIX network server systems, optimizing policies to ensure the fastest and most efficient backup/restore times.
  • Conduct all production data restore requests.
  • Troubleshoot, track and resolve issues involving backups/restores for both servers and clients.
  • Coordinate all tape management issues, including tape inventory, vendor offsite storage rotation, and robot capacity planning.
  • Monitor all backup servers and tape robots, and conduct or coordinate any/all upgrades and repairs.
  • Provide disaster recovery vision, planning, coordination, maintenance, and implementation.
  • Recommend the best technology possible to solve a problem or project, regardless of brand, vendor, or platform. Remains open to non-traditional solutions.
  • Documents all processes, procedures and operations for both internal needs and end users when required.
  • Liaison with managers and systems administrators to meet the highest demands of the system uptime.
  • Participate in periodic off-hours downtime performing upgrades, installations, etc.


Requirements:

Education, Experience and Skills:

  • BS/CS and 5 years hands-on experience with UNIX (Solaris and Linux preferred) system administration, operating system support, and shell scripting.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience hands-on with Veritas Netbackup in a Unix environment at the enterprise level.
  • Programming skills in administrative languages, shell scripting, and PERL is required.
  • Previous disaster recovery planning for IT systems in a corporate or production environment.
  • Knowledge of DNS/NIS required.
  • Knowledge and exposure to multi-terabyte SAN infrastructure a plus.
  • Experience with large scale multiprocessing hardware and software systems.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.

  • Self-motivated energetic team player who can work alongside others to maximize team performance.
  • Solid decision-making, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Proactive and willing to complete unassigned tasks and take on tasks beyond job scope.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be willing to participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs is a requirement of this position.
