Art Director / Senior Concept Artist

Following the development of many successful titles on iPhone such as the Modern Combat, Dungeon Hunter, Gangstar and Asphalt franchises, Gameloft Montreal is currently seeking an Art Director/Senior Concept Artist to collaborate on its next generation of iPhone, iPad and Android games.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for producing art and supervising graphics production on a photorealistic AAA project. The Art Director will act as the main link between the Art team, the Project Manager, the Creative Director and the Studio Art Director at the Montreal studio for a new 3D IP on high-end mobile platforms.

  • Defining the game art style while respecting the initial creative direction;
  • Conveying expectations in terms of quality and content (settings, environments, characters) to the graphics team (concept artists, environment artists, character artists, Animation team) using relevant visual references, concept, production design and mood piece materials;
  • Setting high quality standards;
  • Monitoring and approving work done by the Graphics team so that the produced elements respect the vision of the game and meet quality standards;
  • Directing the evolution and maintenance of art pipeline workflow;
  • Guiding and mentoring the team, and managing freelancers and external studios as needed;
  • Reporting to the Project Manager and the Studio Art Director;
  • Ensuring the accuracy of the art scope, schedule, and budget.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience as Art Director, Senior Concept Artist or Lead Artist on a high-profile console/PC AAA project (shipped titles in mobile video games a major asset)
  • Very good artistic and technical skills (concept art, illustration, sculpting/high-resolution modeling, UI design)
  • Expertise in 2D/3D graphic production tools. Knowledge of compositing and rendering engines is an asset.
  • Expertise in the technical capabilities of the main engines on the market. Knowledge of iOS platforms is an asset.
  • Able to adapt to new management/data tracking systems (SVN Tortoise, Perforce, etc.)

Skills and Profile

  • Passion for video games and a strong interest in a photorealistic/cinematographic look and feel
  • Proven mastery of illustration, animation, graphic design, as well as versatility, including knowledge of backgrounds, characters and UI elements
  • Excellent knowledge of the principles of anatomy and design
  • Successful track record in developing, mentoring and managing multidisciplinary art teams
  • Solid understanding/philosophy of game development and the realities of production from a tech, and design standpoint
  • Good communication and diplomacy skills. Can mobilize and inspire a team.
  • Keen critical eye and able to express ideas
  • Independent and thorough, with excellent organizational skills
