FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York (CUNY)

 invites applications for a tenure-track position teaching Game Design in the Communication Design (formerly Advertising Design and Graphic Arts) Department at the assistant professor level, to begin during the Spring or Fall 2015 academic semester. The communication design program currently offers five tracks:

- Advertising Design,

- Animation/Illustration/Game Art,

- Graphic Design,

- Web Design and

- Broadcast Design / Motion Graphics.

Graduates seek careers as art directors, graphic designers, TV art directors / producers, web designers, 3D animators, illustrators and motion graphics designers.

Position responsibilities include teaching courses in several areas including but not limited to Storyboard Concepts, 2D Animation, 3D Animation & Modeling, Game Design, Game Art and Development. Departmental duties include participation in department advisement, curriculum development, student activities and college-wide committees. The successful candidate is expected to pursue and achieve recognition for creative, scholarly and professional activities at a level appropriate to communication design and graphic arts. Teaching assignments may include day, evening and Saturday courses.

Performs teaching, research and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise.  Shares responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum qualifications are a Master of Fine Arts or equivalent degree in animation, gaming, or 3-D Visualization, plus a sustained record of relevant professional experience, including industry-level skills in 3D graphics modeling and animation for games, game design process, level design and game engines such as Unity, Unreal or Game Maker. Practical knowledge of animation principles and process and digital media arts in general is essential. Applicants should also be conversant in contemporary game theory and culture. Additionally, a practical knowledge of game programming is desired as well as the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.

 

Must be proficient on the Macintosh and PC operating systems and have excellent written, oral and communication skills. This position requires at least five years professional experience, as well as university level teaching experience. A record of successful grant application or securing

industry support for educational initiatives is desirable. For appointment at the associate rank, there is an expectation of significant accomplishment both professionally and as a teacher.

Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent.  Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
