Chair of Design Management

SCAD seeks a Chair of Design Management to develop curriculum, plan teaching schedules, foster interdepartmental collaboration and enhance the reputation of SCAD’s design management program in academic and professional circles. In this leadership role, you will support faculty as they guide enterprising students through the creative and strategic complexities of design.

Professors in this progressive program impart a focus on collaboration and user-centered design at every organizational level. They prepare SCAD’s next generation of innovative creative professionals for successful careers at leading organizations such as 3M, frog, General Electric, IBM, Procter & Gamble, Microsoft and others.

The Chair of Design Management works with the dean to oversee the departmental budget, including its development and implementation. They will also consult with the dean and departmental members to develop a strategic plan consistent with the goals of the School of Design and the university. As a teacher, they will provide professional development opportunities for faculty and evaluate professors on their service and contributions, through class observations and student evaluations. As a recruiter, the Chair will work with the admission department to bring talented undergraduate and graduate students to the program.

The ideal candidate has industry, leadership and supervisory experience in recognizable businesses. They demonstrate innovation, energy, and personal and professional integrity as well as superior interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills. Curriculum-development, leadership and university-level teaching experience in academia are preferred. The ability to motivate and lead students and faculty from diverse backgrounds is essential.

Requirements:

• Terminal degree in business, design, social science or a related field
• Experience leading a design or innovation department, managing a brand or directing design research and/or strategy programs for multiple stakeholders
• Background working with teams and students either as a professional practice team leader or as faculty in a design management educational program
• Body of work exhibiting in-depth investigations, reframing and modeling, and collaborative iteration in the resolution of complex design, business or organizational challenges
