Environment Lead Artist | Stockholm

About the position 

Goodbye Kansas Studios, Stockholm, is seeking a Lead Environment Artist to join our team. 

We are looking for someone experienced in complex environment creation, with a strong 3d Houdini background and is able to help develop new tools and define workflows. 

Within a given project, the Environment Lead Artist is responsible for establishing the technical approach, structure and layout of CG environments enabling other artists to contribute with components that are then assembled into combined environments ready for next stage production in Animation, FX and Lighting.

Responsibilities

  • Help develop the technical framework and pipeline for environment creation including tools and workflows mainly for a Houdini platform
  • Interpret and establish 3d scenes for environments based on Concept art and Reference imagery according to the Director & Supervisor’s instructions
  • Plan, structure and separate environments into assets to be distributed to asset creation teams for finalising
  • Assemble, sanity check and distribute environment scenes for use in intermediate production towards Animation & FX, and final frame rendering in Lighting
  • Understand the entire asset/environments creation process and approving the work of team members
  • Offer technical solutions and verify solutions proposed by team members
  • Create and adapt materials and models from references and concepts
  • Establishing best practices for the Environment teams
  • Work closely with Producers and Coordinators to establish and manage the project team and schedule, to ensure that work is delivered on time



Required technical skills

  • Deep knowledge of Houdini and Maya for environment creation
  • Expertise in modeling and texturing techniques both hard surface and organic
  • Expertise in photogrammetry
  • Deep knowledge of texturing softwares like Substance Painter, Substance Designer

Desired technical skills

  • Knowledge of Mari
  • Shading in Vray
  • Procedural modeling
  • Expertise working in a realtime environment
  • Knowledge of Unreal, Unity, or similar engine



General requirements

  • At least 5 years of work experience in the industry
  • Be adept at self managing and comfortable in leading and guiding other artists
  • Be able to follow a Creative Lead’s vision
  • Able to anticipate and find solutions to problems within the team
  • Great eye for layout and composition
  • Strong communication skills
  • Able to work from photo reference or concept art when available
  • Ability to work in a team setting, under deadlines and time constraints
  • Knowledge of efficient work methods for scattering, instancing and data management in large scale scenes enabling revisions and client feedback to be implemented with minimum production overhead and rework
