The Graphic and Animation Design Program (DSAM)

Longwood University’s Graphic and Visual Communication Design program provides students with a rigorous and comprehensive four-year education in all facets of Graphic Design, Visual Communication Design, and Animation/Simulation and Time-based Media Design.

Our primary mission is to prepare students to be able to think critically, communicate both visually and in writing, and to be able to engage in-and execute-a systematic approach to visual problem solving.  This includes effective research and cross disciplinary problem solving methodologies, concept generation, concept development and critical analysis.

Students are provided with a solid foundation in traditional and digital craft and tolls skills.  We promote exploration, the use of narrative and story-telling, organization, and visual information systems to be able to craft an appropriate message for a specific audience. 

Currently at  Longwood, an effective graphic design curriculum has been developed around current methods and practices, and encourages students to compete nationally in refereed competitions, and through real client interaction with the student-run design agency Design Lab. 

This new program, in conjunction with an excellent liberal arts foundation, graduates students with the skills and flexibility to excel in the market place of today and tomorrow. 

Minimum Qualifications:  M.F.A. in animation, simulation and 3-D modeling.  Evidence of effective teaching, and professional employment in the field.

Our team-oriented faculty comes from a broad base of industry and academic backgrounds.  We value teamwork, commitment to quality teaching, student learning and we value civility and collegiality.

Faculty responsibilities include curriculum and program development, instruction, student advising, and departmental and college committee work as well as staying professionally active through exhibitions, commissions, and publications.  This position will teach courses in animation and simulation, 3-D modeling as well as foundation classes in the Graphic and Animation Design program.

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
