Founded in 1998 with a team of just 30, award-winning Double Negative (Dneg) has grown to become one of the industry's success stories and is now one of the world’s largest providers of visual effects for Film (operating from locations in both London and Singapore with a third facility opening this year in Vancouver). Dneg collaborates with film makers from the first stages of projects; producing ideas and concept imagery and developing previs and vfx production plans, whilst their VFX R&D team create the tools for Dneg artists to produce ground breaking digital environments, creatures, digital characters and effects from the real (water, smoke and fire) to the magical.

They have received awards recognition from the Visual Effects Society (Inception and Sherlock Holmes), BAFTA (Inception and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) and the Academy Awards (Inception).

Most recent works include Man of Steel, Rush, Captain Phillips, The World's End, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Thor: The Dark World, Transcendence and Godzilla. Shows currently in production include Interstellar, Ex Machina, In The Heart of the Sea, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Book of Exodus, Hercules, Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Terminator: Genesis, Insurgent, Grimsby, Ant-Man and Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.


Key Purpose of the Job

FX Technical Directors gather a variety of 3D assets produced by our Build, Layout and Animation departments and use off the shelf software – primarily Houdini but also Maya - and custom pipeline tools to create particle, rigid body, fluid, cloth, fur and hair simulations.

Needs To Do

  • Use an array of commercial and proprietary software tools to produce photorealistic simulations of real-world phenomena while developing innovative solutions to complex problems
  • Create bespoke effects setups to fulfil client briefs
  • Produce test and often final renders of FX elements for a shot
  • Create working test composites for review by the supervision team
  • Work in partnership with lighters &compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard
  • Stay on schedule and meet deadlines whilst maintaining the highest quality of work

Needs To Know

  • Proven experience in producing effects such as smoke, fire, clouds, water, steam and explosions, plus experience with particle and voxel based rendering
  • An eye for details, good sense of timing, and thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to physical simulation in computer graphics
  • Experience in live action FX work preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of Houdini and/or Maya (Python, Hscript or Mel knowledge a plus)
  • Familiarity with pipeline issues and problem solving
  • A good general TD background is desirable
  • Familiarity with at least one node based compositing application (Nuke preferred), and a solid understanding of the compositing process.
  • Strong understanding of linux/ unix based operating systems
  • At least 3 years experience in feature films. Experience in other areas of visual effects (TV, Games) will also be taken into account.
