Puppet Painter

Description

General Summary

The Puppet Painter is responsible for finding the paint color or combination of paint colors that will match, on camera, the color palette established for the puppets by the Creative Leadership. Once the proper blend of color and richness is achieved, the painter must be able to paint each puppet with the highest level of detail and nuance.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Knowledge of color and paint types and able to work on three-dimensional forms at the small scale typically used for stop motion films.
  • Must have experience and knowledge of the full range of painting techniques from brush strokes to airbrushing.
  • Must be able to consistently paint at a highest level of detail under strict deadlines.
  • Able to create nearly identical paint jobs on multiple versions of the same puppet.
  • Must review their work regularly with Puppet Fabrication Supervisor and production design team to ensure they are staying on design and that there is an awareness of production practicality.
  • Must maintain a clean and efficient workspace and be responsible for paint, brush and other material supplies.
  • Must work collaboratively with other departments within Puppet Fabrication.
  • Inventory and track materials needed for work flow and communicate when inventory is low.

 

Qualifications

  • B.S./B.A. in film, art or related field or equivalent combination of education/or experience.
  • 3 years experience in puppet painting, detailed miniature, or model painting.
  • Experience working in film and stop motion production preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Able to work in fine detail for extended periods of time.
  • Working knowledge of assembly techniques.
  • Previous experience with silicone, a plus.
  • Detailed oriented.
