Role Summary

MSG is looking for a Director of Core Pipeline Software to join a groundbreaking post-production department based in Los Angeles. As the content delivery team for the MSG Sphere projects, we strive to create world-class content at an unprecedented scale on the largest LED screens ever made.

The Director works in close coordination with Production Innovation leads, technicians, and IT to identify their needs and to create tools to automate and optimize their workflows. Candidates must have a demonstrated user-centric approach to tool development, with experience working on content creation pipelines for large scale animation or VFX facilities.

The Core Pipeline Software team is tasked with creating and maintaining tools to automate ingest, transcode, plate breakout, VFX asset creation and tracking, rendering, audio processes, color pipeline, review, QC, and final delivery. In addition to the LA office there will be a requirement to expand tools to other MSG locations as well as integrating with third party pipelines and cloud rendering and processing facilities. Candidates must have demonstrated experience integrating all of the above with task and asset tracking tools such as Shotgun.

The resolution, field of view, and sheer scale of the Sphere venues means that the optimization and automation of content creation is a critical role for this Los Angeles facility. The Director of Core Pipeline Software must be able to lead a team that can work quickly and efficiently, prioritize appropriately, and build tools that can be iterated upon and scaled quickly.

  • Perform regular code reviews with pipeline developers to assure adherence to industry-standard conventions for coding and documentation.

  • Communicate effectively with all departments to collect and integrate feedback into tool development.
  • Generate regular status reports, project proposals, and other executive overviews on pipeline status and future improvements.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of ten years writing pipeline tools for a major VFX or animation facility.
  • Expert user of Python, C++ and other common languages, and Linux, with a demonstrated familiarity with tool development and integration for Maya, Houdini, Nuke, Deadline (or similar render manager), and Shotgun as a must.
