FX Technical Support Artist

FuseFX Los Angeles is looking for an exceptionally skilled FX Technical Support Artist to work on a team that is developing VFX for exciting projects!

JOB SUMMARY 

FX Technical Support Artist's are responsible for supporting shot work by building, maintaining, and documenting tools and workflows for the FX Department, including technical setups, OTLs, and templates, along with import/export of data between other departments while developing custom solutions and integrating the facility pipeline tools into Houdini. While this candidate will typically not work on shots directly, they may be required to develop custom solutions for specialized RnD tasks. 

 

Additionally, the Technical Support Artist will be required to keep up to date on new Houdini releases, explore new features with an eye for how to apply them within our projects, and research and develop new software technologies to aid in shot production. This will also include investigating, triaging, and resolving issues reported by users. 

 

This role is also responsible for building, maintaining, and archiving/publishing FX Department library assets, helping to standardize show tools selected for promotion to the facility level. The Technical Support TD will be required to build robust documentation and train artists on how to use the toolsets. Strong written communication and technical writing skills are essential, along with good interpersonal skills and verbal communication. 

 

Ability to script and create clean, advanced user interfaces is required, and knowledge of Maya, Nuke, and other DCC packages is preferred. The ideal candidate will have wizard-level knowledge of all areas of Houdini, a passion for diving deep into the technical aspects of FX production, and the ability to explain those aspects to department artists, supervisors, and production personnel. We’re looking for a personable, motivated mad scientist who loves to building the foundation for creating amazing visual effects and working in a support role for the artists in the creative process.  

 

KEY QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Proficiency in Python, Vex, C++, and any related languages, along with experience building interfaces in QT and pySide. 

  • Houdini development experience. 

  • Experience creating complex FX setups, templates, and OTLs/HDAs for all manner of use cases, including Pyro, Smoke, RBD, Flip Fluid Simulation, Ocean/Wave systems, Particles, Vellum Solvers, Procedural Systems, etc. 

  • Knowledge of Solaris/USD desired. 

  • Experience with AOVs, Lighting methodologies and workflows, and various renderers (Mantra, Karma, Redshift, VRay, Arnold, etc.) 

  • Extensive knowledge of scene optimization techniques, including multi-threading. 

  • Excellent problem solving, communication, troubleshooting, and debugging skills. 

  • Strong mathematical foundation. 

  • Complete understanding of coding process, standards, regression testing, version control (GIT), continuous integration, and testing principles.
