Assistant Professors, Animation Program

California College of the Arts (CCA) is seeking candidates for up to two full time, tenure track Assistant Professor positions in the Animation Program to begin in August 2022.
In keeping with CCA's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, we seek candidates who cultivate and support an equity focused creative and scholarly environment and curriculum within an increasingly diverse and international student body inclusive of a large demographic of first generation college students. Successful candidates will also demonstrate a vibrant creative practice, a passion for excellent teaching and an extensive commitment to professional activity. We will consider artists and practitioners with robust animation experience in independent or studio art animation and drawing or moving image work, traditional or digital, fine arts contexts and/or emergent technologies like gaming, VR and AR. Candidates should be deeply engaged with the fundamentals of animation, the historical questions and concerns of the medium and be articulate in the classroom, astute during critiques, and committed to animation as a form of cinematic storytelling, experimentation and personal expression. They should be aware of contemporary studio and artistic practices and be able to effectively teach a diverse group of students across all levels of the undergraduate and graduate experience. Candidates should be dedicated to mentoring animation's future creative leaders in culturally competent ways and preparing them to assume vital roles in animation and related creative fields.
Faculty will be expected to teach a combination of classes across traditional and digital tools, storytelling and experimental approaches, media history and production methods. In addition, responsibilities include participating in program service and leadership, curriculum design, admissions, serving on committees and collegewide service as a governing ranked faculty member.
Program Summary
Animation program students develop a personal voice and practical expertise by exploring a wide range of classes centered on pre-production, production, traditional animation, and digital skills. The program's course of study focuses on skill building and collaborative animation production that includes: intensive animation exercises, experimentation, character and performance study, storytelling, personal expression, and interactive media. Our program offers an intensive hands-on making experience coupled with a broad exposure to the liberal and fine arts, and prepares our students for a lifetime of creative work. We nurture individual talents and skills while striving to merge new technologies with traditional methods. Our faculty members bring a diverse teaching style and a broad range of real world experience, which allows them to train and inspire our students to become leaders in the field of animation. The College
Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts (CCA) is an independent nonprofit art college located in the vibrant Bay Area with undergraduate programs in architecture, design, fine arts, visual studies, and writing. The college also has graduate programs in architecture, design, curatorial practice, design strategy, fine arts, visual and critical studies and writing. Minimum Qualifications
• M.F.A. or equivalent terminal degree
• Proven track record of working in a culturally competent manner with a global perspective, experience working with diverse groups and fostering an understanding of and respect for diverse experiences and cultural practices
• Evidence of a vibrant art practice including exhibition record, festival screenings, or working through alternative content delivery in social engagement and/or relevant professional experience in animation or related industries
• Flexibility to work across disciplines and to collaborate and develop relationships with other programs
• Ability to balance professional practice with teaching participation in the governing of the College
• Teaching philosophy that demonstrates a clear pedagogical vision, incorporates innovative strategies addressing changing artistic, economic, and technological landscapes and has a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
• Evidence of collaborative leadership skills and experiences
Preferred Qualifications
• College level teaching experience beyond graduate school
Salary
Commensurate with qualifications and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
