Automation Technician

Role Summary

The Automation Technician will be joining the growing MSG Sphere team in Sphere Studios based in Burbank, California. As part of the Playback Department, this position works with our advanced scenic automation tools to move props, scenic elements, technology, and more in our staging facilities. This role will initially support motorized winches and rotational stage systems controlled and programmed with TAIT Navigator. The current system is used regularly for tech demonstrations, VIP demos, and technology development. As we continue to innovate the role will require liaising directly with various departments with regards to future plans and projects that have automation requirements. This role requires an understanding of TAIT Navigator and the ability to trouble shoot quickly. The position requires extensive knowledge of alternate automation hardware, software, & safety protocols. Additionally, some basic video signal flow, LED screen and DMX lighting troubleshooting skills would be helpful but are not necessary for success in this role. The ideal candidate must demonstrate real world experience and a proven track record of safely and reliably running scenic automation systems.

Specific Functions/Activities Summary

  • Reliably operate automation equipment for Sphere Studios
    • Must have experience with show control, axis tuning, 3D rigging, advanced IO, panel forms, and performer flying
  • Perform regular safety checks and maintenance
  • Develop SOPs and other documents
  • Support VIP tours, demonstrations and technical testing
  • Work with internal departments on their project needs
  • Assist with all overhead and rigging work in Sphere Studios

Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years live production experience
  • 5+ years’ experience running TAIT navigator based automation systems
  • Working experience on safety checks and overhead rigging
  • Basic knowledge of live event AV systems and communications protocols
  • Experience incorporating stage automation into live show-controlled productions
  • A confident, professional, and persuasive communication style with senior leaders and team members
  • A passion for creative problem-solving and strategic thinking
  • Ability to remain flexible and calm in high-pressure situations
