Lead Character Artist

As our Art Director said “This is a no-brainer… who doesn’t want the opportunity to do this? Spots like this just don’t come up every day”. This is a really great opportunity to help set the bar and to really have a voice in how character art is handled here at Insomniac Games. The Lead Character Artist will maintain established quality and artistic consistency of character art, by high visual standards and project style as defined by the Art Director. The Lead Character Artist sets an example for the team by the creation of art assets, a mastery of technology and tools pipeline and departmental production dependencies. The Lead has an understanding of memory and frame budgets, production schedule and project goals, programming, animation, and design concerns, understands lighting basics, and sets best practices for bug fixing. The Lead Artist will help implement new production methods to improve performance and efficiency of the team. It is a tall order – but one that we know someone is ready to take…cause it does not happen often. It’s your chance to step up to the plate and knock it out of the park.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
• Provides direction to character artists for aesthetic and technical considerations
• Sets the tone for character creation with advanced technique
• Monitors the needs of rigging, animation, and design to ensure clean handoff for assets
• Maintains a clear and consistent schedule in conjunction with the Project Manager
• Works closely with the Tool and Engine team to develop new or improve upon old technologies to improve character model quality.
• Works closely with Art Director to keep quality and style consistent across all characters.
• Mentors artists in both artistic and technical techniques
• Provides strong leadership and direction to Character Team across all projects.
• Other duties may be assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities: The Lead Character Artist will schedule the team, review work for quality, and carry out supervisory responsibilities that include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; and resolving issues.
