Market Title: Graphic Artist
Department: Library-Digital Media Commons 3D Lab
FLSA: Exempt
Hours/Week: 40 hours/week
Target Salary Range: $40,000 to $46,000 annually, dependent on skills and prior relevant experience

THIS WILL BE A THREE-YEAR TERM APPOINTMENT.

The University of Michigan 3D Lab, a service facility for the University of Michigan research community, is looking for someone who could be described as a "3D Artist" to join our talented staff and help with a wide range of exciting projects. This individual would need proven experience and thorough understanding of generating art assets for real-time "next-gen" systems.

As a service facility for the University of Michigan the UM3D Lab has worked on everything from the training of first responders for mass-casualty scenarios in a Virtual Reality CAVE to developing a "serious" iPad game for individuals with Spinal Cord Injury to help them adapt to the new world around them. We work directly with faculty, students, and staff from the University and need to respond to their various needs. Thus the ideal candidate would need to be well versed in not only generating 3D models and textures suitable for next-gen platforms but also exhibit strong fundamental skills in color theory and composition.

Responsibilities
The 3D Artist would be responsible for developing lush real-time environments and realistic digital characters for a variety of projects and hardware such as our Virtual Reality CAVE. She or he will be responsible for generating descriptive animations and images of processes requested by our clients. Contributing to the mentoring and training of students will also be required as part of daily activities. The 3D Artist will be responsible for establishing art paths with our resident programmers to bridge the gap between various art packages and our real-time engine while exploring new artistic methods and techniques. (See our Universal Character System as an example.)

50% - Developing 3D models and textures suitable for real-time use.

30% - Creating presentation materials, animations, and imagery in support of clients' needs.

10% - Creating documentation and presentations for completed works.

10% - Exploring new related technologies and algorithms for graphical rendering.
