Background on Climate Central

The critical need for a central authoritative source for climate change information was identified by 120 leading scientists, policymakers, journalists, and leaders from business, religion and civil society at a conference held in Aspen, Colorado (October 2005), and reaffirmed by a broad group of climate experts at a meeting in New York (November 2006), both convened by the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. At the same time, in Palo Alto, California, a nonprofit group called The 11th Hour Project was organizing with a mission to popularize good information about global warming solutions, using the transformative power of Silicon Valley scientists, entrepreneurs, and technologists. Climate Central emerged from this collaboration with early seed funding from The Flora Family Foundation and development funds from The 11th Hour Project, which has now made a multi-year commitment to the group. Climate Central incorporated in January 2008.
