Media Specialist, Science Animation & CGI

Position is for one year with the possibility of extension.
Note: This is a grant-funded fellowship position wherein employment is contingent upon the renewal of the grant and carries no layoff or reinstatement rights.

DEPARTMENT: Goddard Earth Sciences and Technology (GEST) Center


GEST and NASA GSFC are seeking an animator or CGI artist to illustrate some of the most mind-blowing Earth and Space Science stories in the Universe! Our small animation group is part a vibrant science communication team that includes producers, writers, data visualizers, educators, and interactive web designers. Our animations and illustrations are distributed just about everywhere – cell phones, news broadcasts, documentaries, viral videos, spheres, domes, and IMAX theaters. You will have a chance to work on a wide array of NASA content including Earth science, astrophysics, solar and planetary science. Animators also work with our engineers with illustrate mission concepts and objectives. Duties of the position include researching and coordinating assignments with scientists, producers, and writers, creating storyboards, 3D models, and renders full 3D animation and graphics as needed, producing animations of NASA science results and mission objectives, translating complex scientific concepts into clear, scientifically informative and engaging animations and illustrations, assisting senior animators and visualizers by creating models, rigging characters, setting up scenes/lighting, rendering, or compositing and managing multiple projects and produces superior content under tight deadlines. Having an interest and awareness of NASA's scientific missions, a passion for science and science communication, and personal participation and interest in user-generated content and online communities, such as YouTube, Facebook, and Flickr will be an asset to the position.
