Job Description and Responsibilities:
Avalanche is a subsidiary of Disney Interactive Studios (DIS), a unit of The Walt Disney Company, focusing on creation of video games based on Disney intellectual properties in addition to the creation of new properties. Avalanche was acquired by Disney in May of 2005. Until the acquisition, Avalanche had operated as an independent developer in the Salt Lake Valley from its? inception in 1995.

We are looking for someone to fill a Character Lead role who is passionate about creating top quality CG characters and is excited by the idea of working on a team of talented artists to create inspiring video games for Xbox and PS3 consoles. The ideal candidate would be a highly skilled artist with a broad range of skills but who has focused and refined his/her skills around character modeling specifically, has a strong technical side, is a good communicator, works well in a team atmosphere and is organized.
Requirements:
• Excellent 3-d character design skills – Has a strong understanding of realistic human anatomy as well as the ability to stylize the human form in ways that are generally appealing. Is able to adapt to other styles and is very capable at taking 2-d conceptual designs and solving, even improving upon, the designs in 3-d.
• Exceptional 3-d modeling skills – Has extensive experience with polygonal modeling and knows how to lay out efficient geometry in a mesh for ideal texturing and deformation.
• Skilled at character deformation – Has a good understanding of how to make a character deform well through skeleton building and weight painting.
• Skilled at facial rigging –Skilled at creating great facial expressions through bone/joint weighting as well as through modeling techniques such as blend shapes.
• Basic rigging skills – Knows at least the basics of rigging a character for animation but is technically adept enough to handle more complex rigging concepts as needed.
• Surfacing/shader skills – Is proficient in the areas of UV layout and normal map generation and is competent with shaders and texture painting.
• Excellent communication skills –Is able to get along and work very well with others of various skill-sets and personalities and is a good communicator. Knows how to give effective critiques and does so in ways that lift and encourage.
• Organization skills – Is able to make, prioritize and stay on top of a list of tasks and track them effectively.
• Flexible – Is excited about learning new tools, engine and processes as we develop a new and expanding character pipeline.
