Environment Supervisor

We are currently seeking an established Environment Supervisor to join our supervisory and leadership team.

Employment period: Position commences August/September 2014, concluding May/June 2015
Location: Adelaide, Australia. These positions are open to Australian and international applicants. 

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Head of Production, the Environment Supervisor will supervise, monitor, direct and influence wide-ranging aspects of high-end environment and matte painting creation across multiple projects. This position is directly responsible for ensuring disciplines of modeling, texturing, matte painting & rigging can create realistic environment assets for high-end feature film. RSP’s environment team use a suite of tools including Mari, Photoshop, Houdini, Nuke, ZBrush, Maya & 3DEqualizer. Demonstrated experience with each software is a fundamental pre-requisite for successful applicants.

Your previously held positions are likely to have included leadership or supervisory matte or environment roles, 2d/3d or modeling supervisor, senior environment TD, etc. You are an expert people manager, a natural team player and forward thinking professional. Drawing on your extensive digital effects knowledge, you can respond confidently to complex creative challenges. Your work pushes quality benchmarks to the highest level. You implement solutions that improve efficiency at a show and facility level. Utilising available resources, your team consistently deliver high quality assets in a timely manner to the satisfaction of show supervisor and client alike.

The strength of your creative eye, excellent communication, collaboration and leadership skills are all highly regarded by your peers. You provide confidence to production that your team has absolute clarity in what is expected of them and conduct themselves with professionalism.

Responsibilities
  • Manage, support and supervise broad areas of hard and soft surface environment and prop creation, with a focus on: digital matte painting, modelling, texturing, set dressing, camera projection mapping and scene augmentation.
  • Collaborate with the art director and VFX supervisor to conceptualise assets.
  • Ensure assets are created in-line with the creative brief and supportive of render optimisation and reuse.
  • In collaboration with the pipeline group, compositing, lighting and modelling, drive and prioritise environment pipeline and work flow improvements ensuring seamless handover between departments.
  • Match Lidar scans and on-set photographic references to create integrated environments.
  • Work with the compositing leads to secure coverage maps to assist in determining matte painting requirements.
  • Provide lighting teams with QA’d assets that can be successfully lit and rendered.
  • Work closely with production on delivery schedules, timeliness and quality standards.
  • Review and approve all work for internal and external delivery, ensuring it hits creative and technical notes.
  • Set discipline and quality assurance standards by regularly providing feedback to your team on the improvement of assets created.
  • Ensure matte painting and modeling leads are effectively running their own teams, providing guidance and advice on resolving issues as they arise.
  • Mentor and actively develop less experienced team members.
  • Promote a collaborative and enjoyable workplace influencing morale, fostering purposeful discussion and positive work ethic.
  • Work with the Sales team, assisting with environment breakdowns, budgets and shot methodologies as necessary.
Required skills and experience
  • Minimum 8 years supervisory or leadership positions in areas such as modelling, texturing, rigging & environment creation.
  • Expert user of production ready software including Maya, Houdini, Nuke, Photoshop, Mari & ZBrush. RSP operates in a Linux system environment.
  • Experience managing and directing script & tool development in a production environment, including some familiarity with coding in Python.
  • Strong photographic background with some on set experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of rigging and animatable topology.
  • Maintain a calm and professional demeanour in a deadline focused work environment.
  • Real world understanding of proportion, depth, scale, and physical space.
  • Expert people management/leadership and organisational skills.
  • Technical and creative problem solving with a can-do mindset.
  • Computer Science, Physics or Mathematics or related tertiary qualification may be required for international applicants.
