Systems Engineer

Description

Gearbox’s IT department is looking for an experienced Systems Engineer with a solid understanding of server and networking systems.  You’ll be friendly and eager to dive into any problem thrown your way. You’ll be comfortable deploying new servers, network technology, and related services.  You’ll think automation first and manual second. This position will require you to be on call 24/7 and may include some heavy lifting.   Advanced knowledge of a mixed OS and network environment is a must. This is a server focused position, but also requires a jack-of-all-trades IT generalist who can handle different technology challenges.

 Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong history of “whatever it takes”, hands-on support
  • Proven experience designing, deploying and maintaining servers in a mixed OS, virtual and physical environment (VMWare, Windows Server, Exchange)
  • Understanding of commonly available automation systems (Puppet, Chef, Microsoft SCCM)
  • Success with monitoring solutions such as Zenoss, Nagios, Cacti, or Zabbix, ingesting syslog, SNMP and Windows event log
  • Ability to deliver on multiple projects and tasks, communicating regularly on your progress
  • Willingness to create high-quality documentation that other sysadmins can follow
  • History of staying current on system and network security trends
  • Outstanding customer service and interaction skills, both verbal and written
  • Work well as part of a team in a fun, fast-paced environment
Bonus points for having knowledge or skills in the following areas:
  • Experience supporting a switched Ethernet network and a robust wireless network, with an emphasis on performance and security.
  • Experience implementing secure networks using firewalls, VPNs, and other common security tools.
  • MySQL or PostgreSQL
  • Revision control systems like Perforce or Git
  • Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence, Bamboo, Crowd)
  • Hosting services on Amazon, Rackspace, or other cloud provider.

What you might work on:

  • Automation to create employee logins across multiple applications on multiple operating systems
  • A web front-end to deploy Windows VMs internally to the studio or externally to the fabled cloud
  • A build process so powerful it drives our build times down to hours…or minutes.
  • A monitoring system that knows what a real problem is, and only wakes us from our beauty sleep when necessary (and when necessary, well before the problem becomes a problem)
  • An all-seeing eye type reporting system that knows how we’re using our storage, whether SAN-based or direct-attached
