tenure track, faculty position, to begin approximately January 1, 2016 or as
soon thereafter as possible.
University of Hawai'i:The University of Hawai’i is
a Carnegie doctoral/research extensive university with a strong emphasis on
research and graduate education. The Department offers the B.S., M.S., and
Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and the B.S. degree in computer
engineering. The B.S. degree program in electrical engineering is ABET
accredited, and the B.S. degree program in computer engineering (established in
2010) will undergo ABET accreditation review in 2015. Current enrollment is
approximately 360 undergraduate and 60 graduate students with 20 faculty members.

UHM College of Engineering:The UHM College
of Engineering is supporting the UH Academy for Creative Media (ACM) System by
establishing a Multimedia, Arts, and Technology emphasis fusing emerging media,
engineering, and digital arts and entertainment research, practice, production,
and theory. The aim is to push the frontiers of developing and integrating new
technology in media to create new forms of art and entertainment. While Hawai’i
has a strong cultural history in the arts and traditionally served as a site
location for many television and movie productions, it has recently become a
focal point for generation of novel enterprises in digital art and
entertainment aided in part by multimedia sharing software such as YouTube.
Duties: The appointment will be
housed within the Department of Electrical Engineering, UHM College of
Engineering. Fifty percent (50%) of
the appointment will be responsible to the electrical and/or computer
engineering program and subject to the Department’s prevailing workload
document, while the other 50% of the appointment will be responsible to the UH
ACM System Program, as represented by the Program Director and as presented
through its activities at UH West Oahu and participating UH Community Colleges. The locus of tenure is in the College
of Engineering, but successful tenure is conditioned upon meeting both
requirements of the Department of Engineering in the College of Engineering and
the requirements of the UH ACM System program.
ACM duties include, but are not limited to, developing Hawai’i’s
workforce in media, supporting entrepreneurial efforts, and directly
collaborating with UHM’s Department of Information and Computer Sciences
faculty in visualization. EE Department duties include developing and teaching
graduate- and senior-level courses in the disciplinary areas listed below;
assisting with integrating multimedia/arts/ technology content into a freshman
introductory engineering course; supervising sophomore, junior and senior-level
hands-on projects; facilitating student internship experiences with industry;
teaching via various distance delivery modes as required. Teaching load duties
in the Department of Electrical Engineering would reflect the workload
guidelines in the Department and the 50% assignment supporting ACM which
includes one course per year taught either at or in collaboration with UH West
Oahu or participating UH Community College. Other duties include developing
externally funded research programs that result in publications in leading
scholarly journals, publishing research work, supervising graduate students,
and providing departmental, college, and university service.
Minimum qualifications: An earned Ph.D. (ABD will be considered) in Computer
Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related
discipline is required with a strong background in engineering and expertise in
a computer engineering research area. Preferred sub-disciplines include but not
limited to visualization, computer graphics and animation, virtual reality,
video game development, high performance computing; multimedia engineering that
involves multimedia software systems; high-speed networking, digital signal and
image processing, human-computer interaction, and embedded systems for
real-time multimedia. Applicants must show a strong commitment to teaching
excellence and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels, conducting
research, and publishing scholarly materials.
