Reporting to the Manager, Technical Services in the
Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design, this position oversees the digital
technologies of the Bachelor of Game Design program. The incumbent
possesses a deep understanding of the technical pipeline, best practices and
all the processes needed to develop video games. The incumbent acts as a
technical consultant to students, faculty and administrators with regard to software,
assignments, servers, laptops and networked computers. The incumbent is
responsible for utilizing his/her knowledge of specialized hardware and
software used in game development and for researching new software programs and
digital hardware, to determine the implementation of new technology as it
relates to curriculum.
Specific
responsibilities include:
· Ensuring that the
equipment is in working order in the labs and studios;
· Meeting with
co-workers and Work Study Program (WSP) students to determine daily work
priorities;
· Guiding and
advising colleagues within the program and WSP students to ensure that service
in all areas of the program is carried out efficiently and comprehensively;
· Performing daily
maintenance to ensure that the services are updated and functioning efficiently
including: Game Engine Asset Server, Revision Control Server, Home Directory
file service, Assignment Hand-in location (user permissions and time locking
when deadline passes), faculty and student web space, student and faculty
electronic mailing lists, user account management for asset and revision
control servers for ongoing game projects, workstation user account management
and authentication, and other such services;
· Responding to
requests from faculty or students to demonstrate equipment or software,
troubleshoot, and answering questions related to technology and/or workflow;
· Managing the
program’s technical budget;
· Overseeing renovation and/or upgrade of classrooms and
lab to meet the standard for Health and Safety;
· Providing
front-line information to prospective students, visiting dignitaries, and other
Sheridan personnel;
· Performing
other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will possess a three year
diploma/degree in Game Development, Animation, Visual Effects (VFX), Computer Science or a
related field and five years’ experience
working in the video game industry, with production credits on one or more
shipped titles; or experience as a Program Support Technologist for a Game
Development program in a College or University setting; or experience in a
Technical Support role, as a Technical Director, or Technical Artist in a VFX,
Animation, or Video Game studio. (Or an equivalent combination of relevant
education and experience) Competent
knowledge of C# and/or other programming languages to support students in the
production of game projects along with competent knowledge of python, perl,
and/or shell scripting languages to manage student accounts, server
maintenance, login scripts, software licences and server share permissions is
also required. Experience in an
educational environment would be considered an asset. Excellent interpersonal
skills and the ability to work
independently as well as part of a team are essential. The incumbent must demonstrate solid customer
service skills and initiative, as well as the ability to effectively solve
problems, work under pressure and make sound judgements independently.
