Manager of Art Development

The Visual Arts Services Group is a full-production studio located in San Diego that specializes in Animation, Motion Capture, Cinematics, Art and Scanning. We are currently looking for a Manager of Art Development who will be responsible for business development, outsourcing, bidding, scheduling, and milestone accountability in a wide variety of art disciplines such as: visual development/concept art, high-end 3d characters, environments, lighting/shaders, visual effects, and cinematics.

Responsibilities:  

Staffing

  • Responsible for building a talented and efficient team that produces the highest quality art at competitive costs.
  • Works with recruiter and Art Director to interview, evaluate, acquire, and retain top talent. Must be able to mentor artists of multiple disciplines. Defines recruiting goals for HR to maintain a balanced team.
  • Develop and retain top-talent within the industry to insure that the studio maintains the highest possible standards for art in its games.

Production

  • Support the creative vision of the client and, in turn, the internal art director, to insure that the efforts of the artists are technically and artistically consistent with that vision.
  • Work closely with the external clients, internal artists, and outsourcing partners to keep quality and style consistent while staying on schedule and budget.
  • Lead and mentor internal artists, technical artists, and outsourcing partners to reach aesthetic and technical goals.
  • Create documentation, communicate requirements, and provide feedback to internal artists and outsourcing partners.
  • Work with art’s project manager and art director to create responsible and competitive bids and schedule.

Management/Strategy

·         Responsible in developing overall strategy for the Art Department in conjunction with the Studio Art Director, Operations & Service Development, and Production teams. Successfully execute initiatives that would improve/maintain Art Department's efficiency; reduce talents' idle time through leadership in art business, service and talent development.

  • Constantly and proactively seek to improve the production processes, tools and pipelines for multiple art disciplines.
  • Work with Operations & Service Development Department to assist in cost optimization for outsourcing and R&D initiatives.
  • Maintain a visible presence in the computer graphics and game industries, representing Worldwide Studios interests with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Represent multiple art disciplines in department strategic planning, scheduling, and budgeting. Provide guidance to Art Director to insure that the needs of art disciplines are being met
  • The candidate must be an organized and attentive leader, strategic, and thoughtful in all interactions with the internal and external teams and partners

 

Qualification:  

  • Must have the necessary experience, skills, and knowledge to manage a team of artists and technical artists from three or more core disciplines: High fidelity 3d character development, environments, lighting & shaders, visual effects, or in-game & pre-rendered cinematics. Knowledge of the terminology and processes associated with these departments is a must.
  • Excellent understanding of how art disciplines function within a game studio art pipeline and how to organize and supervise artists to accomplish their assignments.
  • Excellent understanding of how engineering and technical artist function in the organization and how to interface with them.
  • Possess strong technical knowledge and experience in 3D computer graphics production.
  • Extremely organized in the areas of 3D art asset development workflow, and in the advent of future developments, must possess the knowledge of how best to implement those improvements.
  • Must have an expert understanding of production and be able to schedule, communicate and monitor tasks.
  • Must have at least 10 years of experience in game or film production and lead/supervised medium to large sized team (25+ people)
  • At least 3 shipped AAA 3D games as a Lead, Supervisor or Manager
  • The ideal candidate will be proficient in all aspects of high-quality art supervision and management in the video game industry. 
  • Bachelor of art, degree in business, or equivalent industry experience and training

 

Required Skills/Tools:

 

·                 Strong technical understanding of 3D in-game art development process, limitations and dependencies.

·                 Significant Scheduling, Budgeting, and Outsourcing experience.

·                 Excellent verbal, visual, and written communication skills. Must have a balanced skillset between business development/strategy, technical knowledge, and people management.

·                 Must create polished presentations and proposals to effectively communicate art services to all parts of Sony World Wide Studios.

·                 Must work with Studio Art Director and Operations & Service Development to identify new areas of business.

·                 Work with Operations & Service Development Department to create internal business plans for new art services and pipelines.

·                 Work with Operations & Service Development Department to create materials to justify spending on R&D projects to keep the art group competitive.

·                 Ability to effectively bridge any communication gaps between art and engineering

·                 Continuously improving Art's technical and human competencies so the team can manage and deliver
