Assistant Professor for Motion Graphics/Animation

The University of Connecticut (UConn) is pleased to invite applications for an Assistant Professor for Motion Graphics and 2D Animation in the Department of Digital Media and Design.  Depending on candidate qualifications, this position will either be tenure track Assistant Professor or a non-tenure track Assistant Professor in-Residence.  This position is a full-time, nine-month position. The position will have a creative focus on Digital Graphic Design, Motion Graphics, 2D Animation and Production for the Digital Arts, as well as, Film and Video to start 8/22/2016. The selected candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate level classes and support faculty collaborations through the Digital Media Center. Center based creative research will focus on animation, motion graphics and video production for purposes of entertainment, marketing, branding, advertising, artistic expression, and scientific research and visualizations. 


The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research & scholarship through extramural funding, high quality publications, and impact as measured through citations, performances & exhibits, national recognition as through honorific awards. In the area of teaching, successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development.  Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • BFA, BA or BS in Art, Animation, Digital Media or other appropriate fields OR a MA or MFA in Art, Animation, Design, Digital Media, or other appropriate fields to be considered for the tenure track Assistant Professor position. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable;
  • Professional experience in Motion Graphics and/or Animation design;
  • Demonstrated and current expertise in: Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe AfterEffects, Adobe Premiere Pro, Maya, Cinema 4D (modeling, lighting, textures, rigging, and camera movement); familiarity with Nuke a plus;
  • Digital portfolio demonstrating ideation, design, final project implementation;
  • Evidence of engagement in institutional and/or professional service.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A record of distinguished teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and/or graduate level;
  • Demonstrated professional/commercial experience working with film and/or video productions; advertising or marketing agencies; entertainment companies; video gaming companies; and/or technical visualization agencies;
  • A digital portfolio demonstrating extensive professional Digital Graphic Design, Motion Graphics, 2D and/or 3D animation experience in any or all of the following areas:  film and/or video production, video game development and production, web design, ePublishing, advertising/marketing production, and/or creative making;
  • The ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.
Appointment to a tenure track position is commiserate on a potential to build a successful record of research and scholarship and contribution to other scholarly endeavors, including the ability to contribute to the diversity of the learning experience.

Salary is competitive and based on qualifications and professional experience. The successful candidate’s primary academic appointment will be at the UConn Storrs campus with the possibility of travel to the UConn Stamford Campus on occasion.
