Set Designer

Description

General Summary

The Set Designer works with the Production Designer, Art Director and Fabrication Supervisor to translate approved production illustrations into drawings for set construction. Primarily in charge of drafting details for scale sets, and occasional scale props. Utilizing production illustrations as a starting off point, the set designer realizes the look or aesthetic sensibility of the illustrations into three dimensions using scale model building and mockups to define scale, proportion and design qualities that are evocative of those illustrations.  In addition to conveying the film's design aesthetic into 3D space, it is the set designer's responsibility to create working drawings or blue prints for construction, drawings that clearly identify proportion, spatial relationships and design detailing among the set's design components and in relation to other film locations. 

Essential Job Functions

  • Design interior and exterior sets based on approved visual development.
  • Create detailed working drawings at appropriate scale.
  • Render or create physical 3D presentation models.
  • Able to convey artistic style of a given production, through drawings and model work.
  • Collaborate/communicate with supervisors and various fabrication departments.
  • Able to work within a given schedule and communicate if issues arise.

Qualifications

  • S./B.A. in film, art or related field or equivalent combination of education/or experience.
  • 3 years experience as a set designer in live action, live stage or stop motion production environments.
  • 3 years experience in creating or drafting construction blue prints for 3D environments.
  • Strong aesthetic sense and ability to interpret the unique 'style' of the film into 3D designs.
  • Must be proficient in a variety of related software i.e. Vector Works, Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Working knowledge of printers and scanners.
  • Clear understanding of miniature scale and forced perspective.
  • Strong knowledge of drafting standards, views and conventions.
