Department Chair - Animation

Position Summary

 

Laguna College of Art + Design, located in Laguna Beach California, is seeking a Department Chair for Animation.  Program Chairs are responsible for the routine administration of the major and the representation of relevant faculty and student issues to the Dean.  The Chair communicates relevant academic and administrative policies to faculty and students.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

To Faculty:

·      Communicating faculty responsibilities as stated in the Faculty Handbook

·      Organizing departmental meetings, departmental reviews and departmental committees to further educational effectiveness and cohesiveness

·      Advise and encourage faculty in their teaching duties and assist in mentoring faculty

·      Assist the Dean in identifying appropriate learning/training opportunities for faculty

·      Help create an atmosphere among faculty that is collegial, productive and professional

·      Conduct an annual performance plan and evaluation

·      Provide to the Dean, within the framework of Faculty Handbook policies, appraisals for reappointment, promotion in rank and salary adjustments

·      Assist the Dean in the development of new positions and hiring new faculty

 

To Students

·      Assist students in semester course scheduling.  Ensure that students are following curriculum guidelines

·      Assist students in department related scholarships and competitions

·      Respond to student grievances and grade appeals

·      Assist Admissions in recruitment of undergraduate students by attending NASAD and LCAD Portfolio Days, priority registration and transcript/portfolio evaluation of transfer students

·      Present department policies, procedures and actions to students

 

Curriculum

·      Periodically review mission and assess programs in achieving realization of objectives

·      Work with faculty to establish departmental policies, curriculum content, instructional standards, evaluation methods, course syllabi, and textbooks

·      Assist Registrar in Department course scheduling

·      Appoint faculty to ad hoc curriculum committees

  • One-year term appointed annually by the Deans.  The chair’s appointment is normally for full-time faculty.
  • Attendance at department gallery openings
  • Edits reels of student work including end of year department screening
  • Participation in departmental retention events
  • Involvement in creation of the viewbook and other publications

·      Masters in Fine Art degree preferred

·      Five + years of college level teaching experience, department Chair experience and/or supervisory experience preferred

·      Self-motivated, focused, positive attitude and proactive

·      Ability to multi-task and work in fast-paced, demanding environment

·      Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

·      Ability to develop strong relationships with all levels of employees, management, students industry open house participants and community members

·      Ability to manage effectively faculty member direct reports

·      Ability to work independently as well as part of a team

·      Strong organizational skills

·      Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, Audition and Autodesk Maya (or equivalent)

·      Intermediate Microsoft Word and Excel software programs preferred (or equivalent)

·      Experience in the Education industry preferred

Physical Essential Functions

 

Siting, standing, keyboarding, may lift up to 20 lbs. without assistance, grasping, pulling, pushing, reaching, and moving from one place to another.  This position takes place indoors in a classroom environment sitting at a desk, standing for long periods of time and occasionally working in front of a computer. Occasional bending, stooping, and squatting.
