About the Position

DHX Studios – Vancouver is looking for a creative and experienced Lead Development Rigger to join our team!  This role is a key addition to our development team, who are responsible for the development of new animated projects and pipeline R&D.  The successful candidate will be highly motivated to push the boundaries of what is creatively possible and be passionate about R&D.

Responsibilities

  • Create rigs supporting all asset types; organic, mechanical, character (body/face), vehicles, props, sets, etc.
  • Create efficient and usable custom rigs which support the required design aesthetic
  • Develop, refine and implement rigs according to the needs of animation to achieve the highest performance possible
  • Work closely with pipeline TD’s to push the boundaries of rigging technology
  • Keep current on rigging techniques and technologies
  • Create simple tools to assist in animation workflow and rig interaction
  • Use skinning and other deformers to achieve the intended performance in an efficient manner
  • Troubleshoot, maintain and improve rigs in production, while ensuring their stability for the animation team
  • Evaluate, research and recommend techniques and ideas to improve production workflow
  • Provide ongoing support to character rigs throughout
  • Actively participate in meetings by offering thoughts and ideas
  • Meet production deadlines and maintain regular communication with the production team
  • Communicate with Modeling Lead, Animation Lead, and CG Supervisor on concerns and production issues ahead of time
  • Work collaboratively with the Design, Modeling, and Animation teams
  • Carry out duties in a professional and positive manner
  • Be a positive and creative force on the team
  • Additional responsibilities as required

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience as a Senior or Lead Rigger in the animation industry
  • Advanced knowledge in Maya is essential
  • Solid understanding of key-framed animation development processes, limitations and dependencies
  • Solid understanding of rigging and deformation techniques
  • Complete understanding of basic human kinetics and basic real world physics
  • Knowledge of anatomy for biped and quadruped skeletal and muscular structures
  • Demonstrated knowledge and technical skills relating to character rigging and animation
  • Knowledge in Python is a benefit
  • Knowledge in nCloth, nHair, xGen or other simulation systems is a benefit
  • Pipeline and process-minded – ability to contribute to and help evolve workflows
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently
  • Ability to work alone and collaboratively, often with multiple tasks and under deadline pressure
  • Ability to remain flexible and adaptable to meet the changing needs of development
  • Ability to set priorities, as well as manage the progress of work
  • Proactive work ethic, capable problem solver with the ability to implement solutions
  • Ability to think creatively to resolve technical challenges
  • Highly organized with outstanding communication skills
  • Ability to communicate in a professional and positive manner
  • Ability to adapt to multiple animation styles
  • Excellent team player with strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be open to direction and able to embrace change
