Game Designer in Residence

Brief Statement:

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology is in search of a talented game designer with a portfolio of games for a Game Designer in Residence position. Like an Artist in Residence, the game designer will continue to work on personal projects as well as contribute to the academic environment with a mix of teaching duties, design guidance, project feedback, critiques, and collaboration on research opportunities.

Full Position Posting:

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU) invites applications from outstanding game designers for the position of Game Designer in Residence in the Interactive Media program. The Game Designer in Residence has two main roles: (1) individual game design research developing innovative interactive works, and, (2) participation in the academic community at several levels, most notably by teaching undergraduate level courses focused on game development.

In research, the Game Designer in Residence will work collaboratively with faculty, students and staff on experimental research games by providing critical feedback and design guidance. The Game Designer in Residence may also contribute design ideas and provide feedback to games being developed as externally funded projects within university development centers of the local accelerator program.

In teaching, the Game Designer in Residence is the primary or co-instructor for one or more courses in game production. Viewed broadly, in this role, the Game Designer in Residence provides critical feedback and constructive suggestions to game projects being developed by students. Courses that may be taught or co-taught include Critical Game Studies, Game Design I/II, Project I/II and Interactive Studio. Additionally, the University can create ad hoc courses or seminars to meet the candidate's unique experience and passion.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience


Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have demonstrated background in game design, implementation, and production; and will be able to blend experimental design and technology ideas with practical application. Candidates must have demonstrated significant, original, and creative expressions of new ideas in working game designs, as well as demonstrated the ability to communicate complex ideas and work independently.


Preferred Requirements:

•         5+ years of experience in team-based game design or development

•         A portfolio of traditional and experimental games

•         Experience working with university studies either as an instructor, mentor, or peer advisor

•         For teaching appointments, a B.A. or B.S. in Computer Science, Digital Arts/New

•         Media, Interactive Media, or closely related field is required.


Position Available: December 2016 or January 2017


Term of Appointment:

The appointment would run for one consecutive year, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year. Should the hiring program propose reappointment, a review to assess the candidate’s performance will be conducted. In addition, reappointment is contingent upon availability of funding.


About Interactive Media at HU

The B.S. in Interactive Media at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology builds upon the unique relationship between the concepts of new media, interactivity, user center design, and digital culture. The program combines these fields to build applied experiences in areas such as interactive narrative, videogames, social media, virtual reality, augmented reality and mobile app development wherein user and machine both take on an active role in the exchange of information. 

From needs analysis to deployment, HU’s Interactive Media degree program teaches students to use industry best practices and processes to deliver interactive solutions. From developing for mobile, web, desktop and virtual headset, our program combines technical and non-technical skills to prepare students for the fast growing field of interactive media.
