Senior Technical Artist

Sledgehammer Games is currently seeking an experienced Senior Technical Artist - Character.  This person will join our Character Tech Art team in striving to achieve industry-leading visuals for our games through managing and improving the content creation pipeline.  The ideal candidate is someone who is organized, creative, motivated, and flexible. 

This position will focus heavily on the development of facial animation rigs in Maya (and their associated creation / export pipelines) driven by performance capture facial animation.

Responsibilities include writing tools and supporting them as they are used by our content teams in production. Candidates will need to be able to engage artists, gather requirements, execute on tool implementations, and further support their solutions in the context of production. Other responsibilities include becoming familiar with how all the different pieces of our current pipelines work together and how to best solve problems within that framework, as well as pushing the studio to invest in new cutting edge technology. This position calls for someone who is an excellent problem solver with a keen attention to detail.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build best in class facial rigs integrating performance capture facial animation.
  • Take ownership over and improve upon our existing facial animation rigging pipeline.
  • Lead photo capture sessions with various actors to assure their likeness in-game.
  • Learn our existing tools and processes for content development and support them through documentation, teaching, and end user support.
  • Write tools for artists and support them throughout production in products such as Maya.
  • Rig and skin a variety of assets including characters, vehicles, weapons, props, etc.
  • Troubleshoot issues as they arise and offer solutions to help our content teams be more effective.

Qualifications:

  • 5 - 10 years of professional video games experience
  • Shipped at least 3 AAA video games in a similar position
  • Strong Scripting/Programming skills in Python / PyMel.
  • Experience with the Maya API (Python or C++).
  • Intimate knowledge of Maya
  • Portfolio of work showing problem solving techniques and familiarity with content authoring.
  • A clear understanding of the art production process for different types of assets.
  • The ability to communicate well with other artists and programmers to troubleshoot issues and technical problems.

  • Work well with artists, gathering requirements on their processes and helping them work through issues they may encounter.
