Associate Chair of Graphic Design

Lead the team that nurtures award-winning future graphic designers as the associate chair of graphic design, a large, vibrant department aligned with leading trends in emerging media.
The core of graphic design at SCAD is design thinking. This fundamentally creative process — thinking by doing — encourages students to see differently, shift focus, look from multiple perspectives and realize how perception influences meaning. In this role, you will guide talented students through this learning process, while enjoying numerous opportunities to collaborate with other SCAD departments that are at the forefront of diverse fields.

Responsibilities:
- Day-to-day administration of the academic department
- Direct, coordinate and evaluate the graphic design department
- Develop curriculum
- Foster interdepartmental collaboration and continue to enhance the reputation of the SCAD graphic design department in academic and professional circles
- Oversee departmental budget, including its development and implementation
- Work with the admission department to recruit talented undergraduate and graduate students to SCAD and to the department
- Teach classes annually, as assigned
- Evaluate professors within the department through class observations, a review of student evaluations, a review of service and professional development, and a review of contributions to the department’s goals
- Work with the associate dean to provide professional development opportunities for professors
- Develop, in consultation with the associate dean and department members, a strategic plan for the department that is consistent with School of Communication Arts’ goals and overall SCAD strategic plan
Requirements:
- Terminal degree in graphic design or related field
- College-level teaching experience preferred
- Published credentials, accolades and industry recognition
- Proven leadership skills
- Ability to motivate students and faculty to think creatively and critically
- Ability to work with students and faculty of diverse backgrounds
- Extensive experience producing graphic design in both traditional and digital media
- Strong drawing skills
- Unique style, aesthetic and viewpoint
- Ability to encourage experimentation and help students generate work in a range of styles and media
- Knowledge of the history of graphic design
- Outstanding interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills
- Innovation, energy and personal and professional integrity
- Experience with curriculum development preferred
