ILM VANCOUVER - Modeling Supervisor

Job Description:

The Modeling Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operations of the modeling team, ensuring that characters, environments, vehicles, and props are created according to the designs and visual style of the project.

Working under the guidance and direction of the VFX Supervisor, the Model Supervisor is responsible for establishing the preferred look of the models and partnering with department supervisors to ensure the models move through the pipeline successfully.

  • Oversees the creation of 3D objects that are to be painted, animated and used in a production, with an emphasis on proportion, form, detail, and functionality.
  • Participates in turnover meetings, asset breakdowns, and bidding/re-bidding over the course of the show.
  • Determines the technical and aesthetic approaches to ensure the model meets production requirements.
  • Attend all relevant show production and team meetings to promote effective communication throughout the show production team.
  • Approves Third Party Partner model work and handles technical and aesthetic inquiries.
  • In collaboration with Production, assigns work to modelers based on their individual skills and strengths, as needed.
  • Responsible for reviewing the work of each modeler on a regular basis.
  • Responsible for guiding artists’ overall professional development, providing performance feedback, facilitating overall team building efforts, and maintaining positive morale amongst the crew.
  • Participates in the recruiting and staffing of the modeling team - assesses the work of prospective candidates for the hiring process and works with Recruiting and Talent Management on hiring decisions, as needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Graphics, Industrial Design, Fine Arts, or equivalent having gained a strong sense of anatomy, character design, surface development, proportion, and mechanical functionality. Traditional model building a plus.
  • Minimum 8 -10 years of experience creating complex 3D organic and inorganic objects for Film or TV required.
  • Proven track record of successfully working in a Lead and supervisory capacity on several productions.
  • Experience in UV Layout, Texture projections, 2D texture painting in UV space preferred.
  • Expert knowledge in various modeling software packages. Sketching, drawing, painting and design skills desirable.
  • Pipeline knowledge required.
  • Must have an extremely creative and critical eye for guiding the quality of the model.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and organizational skills required.
  • Ability to learn quickly and assimilate new information.
  • Attention to detail required.
  • Proven experience and ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse skillsets and cultural backgrounds.
  • Technical expertise is a plus.
  • Thrives in a high pressure, deadline-oriented environments
