Job Scope

Reporting directly to the Head of Department (HOD) and working under the supervision of the Creative Director, the Instructor of the 3D Animation and VFX program is responsible for ensuring the curriculum is up-to-date and relevant to current industry practices. They will also deliver curriculum effectively, teach with learning centered approaches, and provide meaningful feedback, guidance, and support to students on a regular basis. The core responsibilities of this role center on both curriculum design and delivery focusing on Visual Effects. The successful candidate will work closely with staff members to help create a culture of exploration, discovery, and critical thinking that supports the overall vision of the 3D Animation and Visual Effects program.

Core Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the HOD and Creative Director to ensure curriculum is accurate, up-to-date and communicated to students in a clear and concise manner.
  • Collaborate with HOD and faculty in the development, delivery, and ongoing maintenance of course content, assignment criteria, and learning outcomes.
  • Develop curriculum per the program mission while utilizing industry input, data, and trends.
  • Utilize course outlines to develop lesson plans and other course materials that detail what will be taught and how the course material will be delivered.
  • Develop thorough and effective student assessment and grading systems consistent with VFS best practices.
  • Mentor students-provide creative and technical guidance/support on their projects.
  • Manage courses effectively-make certain that students are appraised of their academic standing in a regular and consistent manner including timely reporting of attendance and grades.
  • Collaboration with Pipeline Supervisor on resources and equipment issues.
  • Attend regular staff meetings.
  • Participate in program events and support admissions/marketing activities as directed by HOD and Creative Director.
  • Other duties as assigned by the HOD.
Job Qualifications
  • Relevant post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree plus a minimum 5 plus years of industry experience in a lead artist position; or, minimum 10 plus years of industry experience.
  • Prior post-secondary teaching experience is preferred (or demonstrated ability to lead workshops, lectures, and seminars).
  • Portfolio demonstrating a high caliber of professional work.
  • Working knowledge of the following Maya items; fluids, nCloth and particles. Creation and modification of particle parameters for elements such as contrails and atmospherics/effects (rain, snow, dust, contrails, fire, smoke/fog/clouds).
  • Knowledge in World Machine, GeoGlyph and ZBrush softwares is an asset.
  • Expert knowledge of compositing techniques a must and expert working knowledge of Nuke an asset.
  • Strong overall understanding of Maya or comparable 3D package.
  • Knowledge of advanced modeling techniques (photogrammetry, scanning), lighting, motion capture and stereoscopic work an asset.
  • Superior problem solving skills and an in depth knowledge of television and film pipelines.
  • On set supervision and/or live action experience with filming an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide concise, constructive and pragmatic feedback and direction in a professional creative setting.
  • Knowledge and experience with pre-visualization and post-visualization techniques an asset.
  • Ultimate team player, with excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of current industry trends and development.
  • A passion for storytelling and film.
