Technical Director 3 - Lighting

LAIKA is seeking a TD 3 (Lighting) for its Research & Development Department.
The Research & Development Department bridges the gap between art and technology. The R&D TDs primary responsibilities are to create and improve efficient, artist-friendly, production workflows and software tools. As technical problem solvers the R&D TDs may be called on to participate in design work, at least peripherally across the breadth of the entire pipeline. Although the main focus of the R&D TD is on strategic, reusable workflow development, they may periodically participate directly in production projects.
The R&D Lighting TD works closely with Artists and Technical Directors to research, design and develop in-house software tools and processes to solve production issues and make productions more efficient as well as use lighting to creatively support the narrative and visual style of the film.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
Design, prototype and implement artist-centric lighting-specific production tools and workflows.
Work with the documentation and training groups to develop reference materials
Help production staff understand best usage of lighting production tools and workflows
Troubleshoot production problems and proactively work to minimize their impact
Work with production staff to analyze workflows that may benefit from further design work.
Design and execute project work plans to produce known deliverables on a pre-determined timetable
Proactively seek new technologies and processes that will benefit facility production techniques
Present new ideas, work and technology to educate and inform others in the company
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications and Abilities:
5+ Years of Computer Animated (Full Animated or Live Action Mix) Feature Film Experience in Lighting
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Computer Graphics, Art or equivalent Job Experience
Working Knowledge with Maya and Maya's lighting tools
Extensive Knowledge (3+ years) of Shake
Experience (2+ years) working on some flavor of a UNIX platform, preferably Linux
Experience (2+ years) in C/C++ or some other object-oriented programming language
Experience (2+ years) in scripting in Perl or Python
Experience (2+ years) designing user interfaces
Ability to manage time according to current priorities in an efficient manner
Ability to balance short-term production needs with long-term strategic development
Ability to work in a self directed manner, and be adaptable to change
Ability to mentor/educate team members; lead duties, as assigned
Preferred Qualifications and Abilities:
8 + Years of Computer Animated (Full Animated or Live Action Mix) Feature Film Experience in Lighting/Compositing
Masters Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Computer Graphics, Art or equivalent Job Experience
Extensive knowledge (5+ years) of Maya and Maya's lighting tools
Experience with Qt and PyQT
Experience with other software packages such as prman, Renderman, Houdini
