About Clarkson University

Clarkson University is located in Potsdam, the quintessential “college town” defined by turn-of-the-century sandstone buildings and Victorian-era architecture. Potsdam is nestled in the foothills of the northern Adirondack region of the state. With a population of 10,000, our size, the diversity of the community, and our location provide a quality of life that is simply unbeatable.

Potsdam is bordered by the St. Lawrence Seaway and 1,000 Islands to the north and west, and the state-protected six-million acre Adirondack Park to our south and east. Encounters with nature and recreation opportunities abound - from mountain hiking in the summer and snowshoeing in the winter to kayaking and swimming with your family and friends on a nearby mountain lake. Lake Placid, two-time host of the Olympic Winter Games, and the international cities of Montreal and Ottawa are less than a two-hour drive away.

A Diverse Population. Potsdam and its surrounding area is home to diverse groups of people that include an international university community, an established farming and business population, artists and craftspeople, the nearby Akwesasne Nation, and an Amish community. The diversity of our population ensures a culturally rich and vibrant community.

First-rate Schools. The Potsdam Central School district is among the best in the state. Each year, test scores at the elementary, middle and high schools exceed the state averages in every category.

Services and Local Amenities. Arts centers, a well-supported public library, parks, playgrounds, beaches, ponds, rivers, traditional and ethnic restaurants, places of worship, retail stores and service industries are conveniently located within the town limits.
