Our bachelor's degree in game artand design integrates state-of-the-art approaches to online arts educationwhile preparing students for dynamic careers in the gaming industry. We are atthe forefront of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) applications acrossour curriculum, teaching AI literacy, and empowering students to engagecritically, creatively, and ethically with emerging technologies in game art& design.
We seek a dynamic artist-educator who willdevelop and teach online courses and independent studies in game art anddesign, serving learners across New York State, nationally, and worldwide. TheAssistant/Associate Professor of Game Art and Design will collaborate closelywith faculty from the Digital Media Arts program to develop and teach a dynamiccurriculum that spans across game art and design, interactive media, anddigital media arts. You will guide students through the process of creatingadvanced game art and design projects while integrating both theory andpractice. The role involves developing innovative course content, mentoringstudents, conducting research, pursuing creative work, and contributing to ourdepartment's ongoing excellence in online teaching and learning whiledemonstrating a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The successful candidate will join acollaborative community of arts and media faculty shaping the future of artseducation. Engagement in an active creative and research agenda and ongoingservice to the university are expected. SUNY Empire supports faculty as theypursue scholarly work and professional development activities that enhancetheir teaching, research, and creative practice.
Responsibilities:
• Develop and teach a range of courses inGame Art and Design, such as Programming for Game Design, Narrative Design forGames, Game Design and Development, Creating Communication & Meaning inVirtual Game Worlds, Character Design & 3D Modeling, Worldbuilding &Sound Design, History of Games: Story, Myth, and Cultural Impact, Game DesignWorkshop, Game Design Internship, and Capstone in Game Art and Design.
• Collaborate closely with the Digital MediaArts faculty to ensure curriculum cohesion and integration between the Game Artand Design and Digital Media Arts programs.
• Engage in active research and/or creativework relevant to game art and design and related disciplines.
• Mentor and advise students from diversebackgrounds, assisting them in their educational and professional development.
• Contribute to curriculum development andinnovation in game art and design education, including AI literacy and AIapplications in gaming.
• Collaborate with industry and academicpartners to enhance the program's relevance and impact.
• Participate in service to the department,university, and professional communities.
Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
• An earned terminal degree (MFA ordoctorate) from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S.university in in Game Art and Design, Digital Media Arts, Game Design, ComputerScience, Interactive Media, or related field.
• Candidates with master's degrees in arelated area and a doctoral degree in an affiliated but not directly alignedfield will be considered.
• College or university level teachingexperience.
• Experience with supporting diversepopulations.
• Ability to work in a distributed facultyenvironment.
• Demonstrable college-level teachingexperience and a strong portfolio showcasing expertise in game art and designwith knowledge of both 2D and 3D game development pipelines.
• Proficiency in industry-standard softwaresuch as Autodesk Maya, Adobe Creative Suite, Unity, Unreal Engine, 3DS Max,ZBrush, Substance Painter, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools used in gameart and design.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with teaching and mentoring inonline learning environments.
• Experience with academic programdevelopment.
• Relevant industry and/or field experience.
• Understanding of learning assessment andpedagogical approaches in creative fields.
• Fluency with artificial intelligenceapplications in game design and development.
• Cross-disciplinary expertise in one or moreof the following areas: digital media arts, visual art & design, ArtificialIntelligence.
• Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish andEnglish.
Special Information:
• Occasional travel will be required tofulfill university-wide commitments.
• Office hours will vary to accommodatestudent needs.
• Some evening and/or weekend engagement withstudents is required.
