Pipeline Supervisor, Lighting

Purpose of the job:

The Lighting Pipeline Supervisor leads the development of the core set Lighting and Shading tools, working with Technology and Production Leadership to ensure that they meet the needs of current and future shows.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, development, and evolution of texturing, shading, and lighting workflows and pipeline, working with relevant Leads and Supervisors, the Global head of Pipeline and the Global Production Technology Supervisor to ensure that the work is consistent with the rest of the pipeline while addressing current and future show needs
  • Work with Leadership to establish best practices for common shading and lighting techniques for Digital Domain’s chosen renderers (currently Vray and Mantra)
  • Lead the effort to maintain and extend the facility’s library of shaders and tools addressing lighting and look development needs
  • Lead efforts to troubleshoot rendering and lighting technical issues, including ray tracing render optimization, and mentor others in doing the same
  • Develop best practices and approaches for shading specific problems (i.e. AOVs, Projection, SSS, etc)
  • Attend, report on, and present to relevant Pipeline Councils
  • Keep up-to-date on current industry technologies and techniques
  • Participate in discussions with 3rd party vendors as these discussions relate to department initiatives
  • Craft and update documentation for the tools, techniques and workflows

Education and/or Experience Required:
  • 3+ years experience as a Senior Lighting Technical Director or Supervising Lighting Technical Director
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent work experience
  • Extensive experience in a wide range of CG Look Development, Shader and Lighting techniques
  • Ability to troubleshoot and debug rendering issues
  • Strong working knowledge of large-scale, production-level pipelines a necessity
  • Ability to balance technical and aesthetic concerns
  • Solid experience developing plugins Vray SDK
  • Experience with competing Render SDKs, such as Prman, Arnold, Mental Ray a plus
  • Proficiency in one or more professional graphics package C++/Python APIs, including the Maya SDK, HDK, Nuke SDK
  • Working experience with one or more professional graphics packages, including Maya, Katana, Arnold, Houdini, and/or Nuke

Working Conditions and Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Office working environment
  • Hours for this position are based on normal working hours but will require extra hours pending production needs
  • Walking/bending/sitting
