About the Position

DHX Studios is seeking a driven Supervising Storyboard Director to lead a team of talented Storyboard Artists on one of our awesome 3D productions! As the Supervising Storyboard Director, you will be directly responsible for actualizing the vision of the project by transforming the script into images that best convey the story and characters presented by the writer, while following the guidelines of the production plan.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Series Director on the shooting style of the series and create supporting materials/guides for storyboard team
  • Establish and define process and workflow for the board team, and make sure each board artist is properly prepared for each episode
  • Annotate scripts thoroughly in conjunction with the Series Director and direct the storyboarding team throughout the boarding of an episode
  • Communicate ideas effectively and recommend solutions to help interpret the script visually
  • Consult with Series Director as to the feasibility of action in the script and suggest creative solutions that will maintain the vision of the series
  • Approve the final storyboard panels and recommend revisions as needed
  • Be aware of the show continuity and ensure consistency across the show
  • Strategize revision plan with the Series Director and oversee revision process
  • Be aware of the progress of each board artist, inform production on problem areas before they negatively impact and always be looking for production-friendly solutions
  • Work closely with the storyboarding team to create balanced solutions to any related technical and aesthetic issues
  • Participate in storyboarding meetings and adjust/refine storyboards as indicated by Series Director
  • Ensure the storyboarding team is productive by answering questions that arise
  • Train, mentor, and motivate new storyboard artists who are placed on the team
  • Assist/guide storyboard artists in the organization of their assignments
  • Anticipate, communicate, and troubleshoot any creative or technical issues with assistance from key stakeholders
  • Actively participate in production-related meetings by offering thoughts and ideas
  • Assist with and complete production-related assignments
  • Keep current on storyboarding techniques and technology
  • Ensure the Series Director & Producer instructions are carried through in the storyboarding team
  • Carry out duties in a professional and positive manner
  • Be a positive and creative force on the team
  • Lead by example and set the bar for quality storyboarding while maintaining production timelines and milestones

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in industry
  • Experience leading a team
  • Excellent understanding of animation timing and posing
  • Experience with 3D animation and familiarity with the strengths and weaknesses of CGI animation
  • Experience in preschool animation an asset
  • Superior understanding of filmic storytelling principles and techniques
  • Must be deadline motivated
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Strong planning and management skills
  • Able to effectively communicate processes, plans and concepts
  • Able to effectively communicate in a professional and positive manner
  • Able to create entertaining and persuasive messages through storyboards
  • Able to take direction, collaborate, and be a team player
  • Able to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently
  • Able to adapt to multiple show styles
  • Must be open to direction and able to embrace change
