Senior Environment Artist

Human Head Studios is looking for a Senior Environment Artist to create highly immersive, realistic 3D game environments within UE4 technology for both PC and Console platforms. While working closely with Art Direction, the ideal candidate will oversee the full development of specified areas within the game; from block-out through asset creation, set dressing, lighting and final polish. They should be self-motivated, creative problem-solvers with the ability to communicate well and collaborate with designers and other disciplines in a team oriented development process. 

This position requires experienced understanding of industry game engines, industry standard art tools, pipelines and best practices. They will coordinate with a team of skilled artists in the completion of high quality, interactive environments. 

As a Senior Environment Artist, you will be asked to mentor junior level artists, and also R&D new development techniques that push the environmental quality bar forward.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the overall production of specified environments within the game
  • Work with artists, scripters and designers to ensure environments support the visual, narrative and interactive direction.
  • Create Environment Content from level design block-outs to finished assets
  • Curate outsourced assets to ensure consistent quality and efficiency
  • Create interior and exterior lighting within environments and cut-scenes
  • Work with special effects artists to develop and implement environmental vfx
  • Work with Art Director and Narrative Director to develop visual targets
  • Create realistic PBR materials, and help develop material pipelines
  • Assist Art Director and Rendering Technician in defining and managing performance budgets for the given platforms.
  • Provide hands-on and documented instruction of efficient work flows and best practices.

Requirements:

  • 5+years professional game production experience
  • 2+years creating content for current 3d Game Engines (UE4, Unity5, CryEngine4, Snowdrop,etc..)
  • Experience creating/shipping high quality, immersive, 3D environments for AAA titles on both PC and game console platforms (PS4, XBOX ONE)
  • Thorough knowledge of the game development process
  • Strong ability to create realistic, interactive environments within current game engine technologies
  • Strong understanding of PBR rendering, materials and content pipelines for current game engines
  • Self motivated and proactively able to problem solve without direct supervision
  • Stays current with the tools and techniques for cutting edge asset production
  • Ability to complete tasks within given time and technical constraints

Pluses:

  • Extensive knowledge with Unreal Technologies, specifically UE4
  • Extensive knowledge/experience with Substance tools (Painter/Designer)
  • Experience with 3dsMax, and/or other modeling software
  • Understanding of real-time CG lighting methods and technology
  • Understanding of mise en scene, cinematography, scene blocking and lighting techniques to set the mood
  • Experience with photogrammetry, 3d scanning and processing of digitized 3d content
  • Traditional Art background with an understanding of composition, color and light

General Job Requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Live in the United States and be willing to relocate to Madison, Wisconsin
  • Be a self-starting, hard working individual capable of maintaining focus within a rigorous, deadline-driven production schedule
  • Able to work closely on a day-to-day basis with others of different disciplines in an open, team-oriented environment
