Department/College Description


The College of Imaging Arts and Sciences offers programs in Art, Design, Crafts, Film and Animation, Photography and Photographic Sciences, and Print Media. The internationally-recognized School of Film and Animation (SOFA) offers BFA and MFA degrees in film production with emphasis in animation or live action, and a BS degree in Motion Picture Science. SOFA provides a creative community where students have the opportunity to discover their unique talents and expressive potential, while at the same time developing the skills needed to fulfill any creative or technical role in the film and animation industry. SOFA enrollment is typically at 275 undergraduate and 50 graduate students.


A new production facility, MAGIC Spell Studios, is currently under construction. Opening in the fall of 2018, it will provide an additional 32,000 sq.ft. of space, including a NY State Tax incentive qualified 7,000 sq.ft. sound stage, a 180-seat Digital Cinema Theater, sound mix theater, color correction studio, game design labs, and animation facilities. In addition to supporting our academic mission and allowing for collaboration and growth in animation for gaming, it will be available in summers for commercial production and external regional ventures.

Detailed Job Description


The School of Film and Animation (SOFA) is inviting applicants for a lecturer faculty position in live action filmmaking to join our full-time faculty teaching courses in cinematography. Position requires advanced skills in all motion picture cameras with expertise in at least one of the following areas: general film production, editing, and sound. Courses taught focus on a variety of skills and concepts in the production of narrative, documentary, and experimental films. SOFA faculty members are working professionals dedicated to the education of future independent and industry filmmakers. In addition to an assigned teaching load, responsibilities include career advising for students, assisting in curriculum development, and providing service to the college, school, and department.

Required Minimum Qualifications


• A Bachelor’s degree and professional experience may be considered for a Lectureship position.

• Artistic achievement in filmmaking.

• Expertise in cinematography.

• Expertise in at least one of the following areas: general film production, editing, and sound.

• Body of work (portfolio).

• Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.


• ?PREFERRED: 

• MFA degree

• Teaching experience on the college level (3+ years).

• Professional filmmaking experience (3+ years).

• Proficiency in current cinematographic technologies and camera equipment.
