Department Chair - Illustration

Laguna College of Art + Design, is seeking a full-time experienced Illustration Department Chairperson.  The College is located in an internationally recognized arts colony in Laguna Beach, California and offers a diversity of majors in Animation, Graphic Design and Digital Media, Fine Art, Game Art, Illustration and Entertainment Design.

 

Position Summary:

The Illustration Department Chair teaches courses in illustration ranging from beginning to advanced classes including digital media and foundations; contributes to development and oversight of the illustration and entertainment design curricula; serves as chair to maintain a quality four-year degree program

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Summary of Teaching Duties:

·      Teaches (6 units) each semester, with emphasis in illustration and entertainment design (lower- and upper-division courses)

·      Helps create illustration and entertainment design curricula and maintain a four-year degree program

·      Instructs, manages, and supervises students in classrooms through demonstrations, discussions, visual aids, field trips, individualized instruction, and lectures

·      Plans, prepares, and follows an approved course of study with measurable objectives for each course taught

·      Establishes and maintains office hours and advises students as needed

·      Attends faculty senate meetings; serves on committees as assigned

 

Summary of Chair Duties Include:

·      Organize departmental meetings, reviews and committees to ensure educational effectiveness; develop and assesses program mission and learning outcomes; implement annual and long-term assessment reviews and action plans.

·      Perform transfer portfolio reviews for incoming transfer students throughout the academic year and during the summer.

·      Effectively manage full and part-time faculty, conduct annual faculty performance reviews and evaluations, encourages faculty in their teaching duties and mentoring faculty.

·      Advise and mentor students, address student grievances, grade appeals, department related scholarships, and competitions and/or other academic concerns.

·      Assist Admissions in recruitment of undergraduate students by attending NASAD and LCAD Portfolio Days, priority registration, LCAD Open House and New Student Day events.  

·      Conduct Student Advancement Reviews twice per year.

Position Requirements, Experience and Education

  • Masters of Fine Art degree preferred
  • Department Chair experience and/or supervisory experience preferred
  • Five+ years of college level teaching experience, (college level drawing, figure drawing, and painting, illustration, entertainment design and foundations)
  • Broad art experience in a range of drawing and painting and digital media with demonstrated ability to teach advanced illustration
  • Demonstrated use of drawing and painting as a primary core media in applied artistic practice
  • Successful experience teaching college level illustrative applied arts and foundations classes
  • Evidence of ability to bring expertise of professional practice to the position; ability to make connections within a range of media in teaching
  • Self-motivated, focused, positive attitude and proactive
  • Ability to multi-task and work in fast-paced, demanding environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with all levels of employees, management, students, industry open house participants and community members
  • Ability to manage effectively faculty member direct reports
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Adobe CS, Microsoft Excel, Relevant 3-D and digital software

Physical Essential Functions

Siting, standing, keyboarding, may lift up to 20 lbs. without assistance, grasping, pulling, pushing, reaching, and moving from one place to another.  This position takes place indoors in a classroom environment and in an office setting and may include sitting at a desk, standing for long periods of time and occasionally working in front of a computer. Occasional bending, stooping, and squatting.
