Graphic Technical Director


As Graphic Technical Director you will be in charge of ensuring the technical quality of the graphic elements produced by the teams under your supervision (FX artists and technical artists) for both game projects and animation projects using game engines. You will assist the art teams to achieve the required graphic quality for special effects, fluid simulations, shaders and lighting using Unreal and Unity.  Finally, you will also be responsible for the development and coaching of the FX artists team as well as the technical artists team.

Your responsibilities :

  • In collaboration with the CG supervisor, define the technical requirements for achieving the artistic vision established for the project;
  • Establish and ensure compliance with guidelines for tools produced by his/her team;
  • Ensure the quality and optimization of the graphic tools produced by his team during the production phase;
  • Participate when necessary to the evaluation or selection of tools to be used by the art teams in production;
  • Report regularly to the CG supervisor to keep him/her informed of issues and developments;
  • In collaboration with the CG supervisor and other team members, determine the best approach to address the technical challenges and constraints related to special effects and visual quality required for the project;
  • Participate in daily project monitoring meetings;
  • Supervise and mentor technical artists and FX artists under his/her responsibility;
  • Maintain up-to date knowledge of new technical and technological developments related to visual effects in game engines in order to apply new methods or tools and train the team under his supervision
  • Performs other duties as required.


  • A minimum of 4 years experience in the video game or film industry as a technical artist, special effects artist, assistant graphic design technical director or similar.
  • Experience in team management;
  • Solid experience with Unreal Engine, Unity and Maya in a production context;
  • General knowledge of all aspects of 3D animation (modeling, rigging, lighting, shadows, textures, animation, composition, etc.);
  • Solid experience in animation of special effects;
  • Experience in shader creation;
  • Experience in creating smoke, fire, cloud, water, steam, etc. effects;
  • Resourcefulness and ability to complete a take alone or with a team;
  • Ability to script is essential;
  • Knowledge of Houdini and Nuke an asset.
