SENIOR 3D ENVIRONMENT ARTIST

Schell Games is currently seeking a talented Senior 3D Environment Artist to join our current team working on a wide variety of 3D projects across various media including AR, VR, location-based attractions, and mobile devices. Team experience is essential, as is the ability to be self-directed and be able to prioritize your workload efficiently and collaborate closely with the development team.

Our ideal candidate will be able to create visually compelling lighting and ambiances for both interior and exterior settings in an upcoming large-format attraction.  Working closing with the Art Director, environment leads, and concept artists, the candidate will be responsible for the production and implementation of lighting and ambiances that uphold the aesthetic vision of the game and maintain the highest level of consistency and quality possible.  Candidate should have previous experience guiding and mentoring more junior 3D artists, and be able to work well as a team member or as a small team environment lead.

Our ideal candidate will have the ability to handle both technical and artistic issues during game development as well as be able to work quickly in a team atmosphere with schedules and reliable milestone delivery. Passion for precise level/prop design and the ability to reach a wide range of styles within the media are crucial.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:  

Candidate will work with the Art Director to drive vision for the game and establish pipelines for efficient environment development. We expect they will be involved in scoping work for the environments necessary and planning for milestone deliveries, while ensuring that assets can meet the requirements of the game engine and hardware, while maintaining highest visual quality.

This candidate should have previous experience working within Maya to create assets and environments for interactive game worlds. Mastery of lighting systems and strong understanding of lighting theory and real-time techniques is required. 


DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 7+ years of experience video game development and at least 1 published AAA game 
  • At least 3+ years of experience as a 3D Art lead in video game development and at least 1 published AAA game
  • ZBrush high-to-low poly development experience
  • Expert Unreal4 world-building experience is necessary
  • Unity experience is desirable
  • Excellent understanding of color, space, mood, materials, and the properties of light   
  • Expert knowledge of Maya
  • Expert understanding and demonstration of static and dynamic lighting techniques in Unreal Engine
  • Expert understanding of PBR material creation in Substance Designer and/or Painter
  • Flexibility with adoption of art styles and direction is critical 
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly to new technologies
  • Knowledge of real-time lighting techniques/technologies, particularly work in PBR environments
  • A resourceful problem solver for balancing lighting quality and gameplay requirements
  • Strong communication/collaboration skills
  • BS/BA/BFA degree in graphic design, fine arts, animation, visual communication, or similar preferred
