Instructional Faculty - Tenure Track

Description

Animation, Film, Game Development, VR - Multiple Positions - All Ranks

The RIT School of Film and Animation and the RIT School of Interactive Games and Media, in collaboration with the RIT Center for Media, Arts, Games, Interaction & Creativity (RIT MAGIC Center), invite candidates for multiple, college-based tenure-track positions at assistant, associate, and full professor ranks with expertise and collaborative potential in one or more of the following areas: experimental media-centric experiences, game development, game animation, virtual reality, digital media, 3D animation, and interactive film. These positions are being filled as a part of a strategic hire in collaboration with the MAGIC Spell Studios effort, a new public-private partnership at the university focused on growing the regional, state, and national economy through entrepreneurial and creative engagements with the digital media sector. Successful candidates are expected to contribute broadly to the goals of the MAGIC Center, as well as one or more of the academic programs in the respective colleges. Multi-disciplinary approaches are highly encouraged, and each position will be eligible for tenure in the most appropriate college while being affiliated with, but not employed by, MAGIC Spell Studios.

About the RIT MAGIC Center and MAGIC Spell Studios: The MAGIC Center is the university's multi-disciplinary hub for the exploration and production of digital media by the RIT community. It represents a conscious and deliberate effort to blur the lines between the arts and the sciences, between technology and expression, between the study of the creation of media and its impact and effect on society and the human condition. The MAGIC Center is designed to bridge the gap between research and prototyping, a common output of academia, and the ability to bring industry polish and commercial scale and support to associated projects. At the MAGIC Center, faculty, staff, student researchers, artists, and practitioners come together to create, contextualize, and apply new knowledge in a multitude of related fields and disciplines as appropriate not only to STEM, or the Arts & Humanities, but their intersection. Founded in 2013 through the Office of the President, the RIT MAGIC Center and MAGIC Spell Studios represent a university-wide strategic effort and focus on digital media research and development across the university and in collaboration with multiple programs, departments, centers, and community efforts. The center and studio are directly intertwined to support both exploration and research in digital media with early-stage commercialization and entrepreneurially focused mentorship for the entire campus community, and report directly to the Office of the Vice President for Research. It was further designated one of 3 ‘NY State Games Hubs’ in 2016 along with RPI and NYU, with regional and state-wide opportunities and responsibilities through this network, and has already published numerous games, apps, and collaborative projects, including the first Xbox One game ever published directly by a college or university. The university has further partnered with state and community partners for the construction of the MAGIC Spell Studios building, a new $25M facility that helps provide a home for these activities at the university, opening in fall 2018. The facility contains a 7000 sq ft sound stage that qualifies for use under the NY State Film Tax Credit, a 185-seat 4K theatre, three digital media labs, a commercial incubation lab, a VR/AR/MR lab, stop-motion rooms, 2D and 3D animation classrooms, numerous other labs and facilities, as well as offices and workspaces for affiliated faculty and staff.
