Join the MSG Ventures team in the creation of groundbreaking immersive, conceptual, and interactive experiences. As the Director of Software Operations, you will lead a department in specifying, designing, building and operating the highly scaled rendering and computational systems supporting content creation for MSG’s world-renowned venues, including the MSG Sphere.
The Director of Software Operations provides management and oversight for a team consisting of data center engineering, servers, storage, networking, cloud engineers, build and test automation, and the day-to-day operations and support of this infrastructure. He or she will hire and guide a dynamic, collaborative team of systems administrators and engineers, and scope and plan infrastructure delivery and operations in concert with MSG and Obscura processes.
The Director of Software Operations is responsible for all activities of the Software Operations team. He or she must be able to effectively manage software engineers of all levels and focus on infrastructure building and operations in a complex environment of immersive digital media production. The Director of Software Operations is not responsible for traditional office backend systems such as email, calendar, printing, or the like.
SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS/ACTIVITIES SUMMARY:
• Develops Software Operations department staffing and organizational strategies to align with MSG and Obscura's business goals. Responsible for hiring the team.
• Provides leadership to all Software Operations staff.
• Manages all software operations activities, including scoping, timeline planning, creative problem solving and technology conflict resolution, future-proofing, ongoing project and work guidance.
• Ensures the high standards of MSG and Obscura are maintained at all times.
• Provides a rapid development environment supporting software development processes such as build engineering, continuous builds and integration, code quality and test automation frameworks to exercise test coverage as defined by the software teams.
• Provides configuration management support to facilitate rapid deployment and growth of the render farm and related infrastructure.
• Collaborates with other Department Heads, Producers, Project Managers to ensure the infrastructure needs of each project are met on the appropriate timelines.
• Maintains infrastructure documentation including specifications, sizing calculations, architecture diagrams, troubleshooting and operational runbooks.
• Schedules and executes preventative maintenance on production rendering and compute infrastructure.
• Maintains relationships with key vendors and suppliers.
• Responsible for staffing and resource allocation, project proposals, timelines.
• Approves and manages contractor scope and invoicing.
QUALIFICATIONS:
? Experience building and operating a substantially scaled compute environment, with strong preference for candidates who have built “render farms” for media and entertainment
? Technical knowledge and experience in data center engineering as well as “infrastructure as code” style management of cloud computing.
? Well versed in modern networking and storage infrastructure
? Familiar with tools and best practices for automating software builds, testing, and deployment into the infrastructure
? A demonstrated track record of gaining trust and respect by consistently demonstrating sound creative, strategic, and analytical thinking skills, while maintaining composure in stressful situations.
? Must be able to manage and develop a diverse, distributed technical team
? Must be able to define, assess progress toward and communicate project milestones
? Must be able to use appropriate terminologies and language to accurately convey changes or direction in concept or design, including to and from non-technical staff
? Requires the ability to work on multiple projects and prioritize tasks for each
? Requires the ability to achieve results by interacting and collaborating with other departments within MSG Ventures, MSG IT and Obscura to solve problems

? Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of experience
