Role Summary

The Head of Production is responsible for the effective and consistent high performing day to day running of live action production in the Los Angeles studio which is responsible for creating and executing on the media needs for MSG.

As one of the first key hires to the newly formed LA Studio, the Head of Production will work closely with the General Manager to build out the production operations and production management processes of the studio to serve the live action production needs for Sphere productions. He/She will be responsible for building an on-set crew, overseeing the day-to-day production management of all shoots and verifying dailies get ingested and distributed correctly. The Head of Production is responsible for overseeing and maintaining a smooth and consistent production operations, maximizing production value and quality while effectively communicating across the matrix of the organization.

Specific Functions/Activities Summary

• Oversees all live action production, aligning department staffing with requests and ensuring that capture needs are met seemlessly.
• Creates a pipeline for executing on production requests, building a database of line producers and other key on-set crew members who understand Sphere and how to shoot for it.
• With a thorough understanding of all capture equipment and the post-production pipelines of each camera, guides each show’s creative team to maximize their ability to capture great footage.
• Manages key staff, project budgets and collaborative management for the direction, growth and vision of the studio.
• Understands the challenges around locations and bring that expertise to the planning of crew and equipment being sent to capture images.
• Guides the vision behind and the shaping of content for our library that will be used as assets for future shows.
• Ensures transparency into production management, spend, reporting, methodologies, staffing and strategies on a regular basis to evaluate production performance.
• Facilitates strong interdepartmental communication and cooperation across all areas necessary for successful production such as, creative and production technology and IT.
• Works alongside the GM and People Practices to promote and implement local processes which ensure healthy, productive production operations.

Qualifications

• 15+ years’ experience live action production with leadership and oversight responsibilities across complex productions.
• A proven leader with experience on-location with multi-camera arrays, high resolution (8k+) capture and all issues pertaining to shooting in exotic locales.
• Experience in capturing for complex post-production pipelines and a desire to deeply understand how they influence capture decisions and vice versa.
• Passionate about creating stunning high resolution images and presenting them on the largest screen in the world
• Strong leadership, interpersonal, analytical, problem solving, negotiating, facilitation, organizational, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
• Excellent communication skills and experience cultivating creative working relationships with production technology, producers, artists, production management and Studio leaders.
• Proven mentoring, supervisory, talent development and team-building skills in a creative organization.
• Ability to work in a matrix environment and across multiple locations.
• Bachelor’s degree. Master’s preferred.
