Job Description:
The BFA in Animation Program at Villa Maria College began fall 2008 and is a competitive, hands-
on, and demanding program that recruits highly-talented and committed students. The 9:1 student to
faculty ratio enables instructors to have a meaningful impact on the artistic development of each
and every student. Villa Maria has three state-of-the-art animation labs, each with 18 workstations
and Cintiq tablets, including software such as the Autodesk Entertainment Creation Suite, Zbrush,
Substance Painter, Adobe CC, and Toon Boom Harmony. There is also a stop-motion studio that uses
Dragon Stop-Motion, as well as a separate puppet-building facility. The program offers students HD
digital video cameras, digital still cameras, as well as an audio sound effects library.
Cross-program collaboration is also strongly encouraged. Villa’s Animation students have
successfully collaborated with students from Villa Music students to produce originally scored
music for their films. There is also the opportunity to collaborate with students from a variety of
additional BFA programs, including Digital Filmmaking and Game Design. Junior and senior films are
screened at local movie theaters.

The first two years of the Animation program stress the understanding of animation principles,
acting, film theory, and storytelling, and give the students traditional and technical tools and
software to be able to bring their stories, concepts, and projects to life. Students then take part
in a formal review process to determine a specialization, at the end of their sophomore year. The
specialization becomes the focus of their studies in the junior and senior years.
