Role Summary

MSG is looking for a Director of Artist Pipeline Technology to join a groundbreaking post-production department based in Los Angeles. As the content delivery team for the MSG Sphere projects, we strive to create world-class content at an unprecedented scale for the largest LED screens ever made.

This role is responsible for collaborating with each show’s creative team, live action production, Editorial Integration I/O, & QC, and the VFX Technical Supervisor to determine the scope, budget, and schedule for all VFX activities required. This role involves on-set oversight to assure that VFX elements are captured within the agreed-upon specifications, and to help problem solve or flag any issues that will lead to adjustments in schedule or budget. During post production, this role will involve staffing, scheduling, and managing an internal VFX team as well as overseeing third party VFX vendors in collaboration with the VFX Technical supervisor. This position requires a high level of organization and management of large budgets with activities distributed across the globe.

Candidates must demonstrate real world experience and a proven track record of applying all of the above processes within the walls of a fast-moving creative environment while remaining conscious of each project's budget constraints. This role will additionally involve communicating with Pipeline and IT to forecast VFX needs and to coordinate feedback from artists with an eye on optimizing processes and automating tasks where possible.

Specific Functions/Activities Summary

  • Work with VFX Technical Supervisor and other department leads to properly scope and budget VFX for each Sphere show. 
  • Work on set as needed to assure VFX remains inside scope and budget. 
  • Schedule, budget, oversee staffing, and manage workload for an internal VFX team. 
  • Manage bidding process with external VFX vendors to scope and budget work, then manage selected vendors to assure delivery at contracted level of quality on time and in budget. 
  • Oversee reviews to assure that notes are properly communicated and addressed, and that all tasks and asset statuses are properly tracked. 
  • Assure that Editorial, Integration, I/O, & QC are aware of status of all deliverables at all times and communicate any issues that will lead to delays as they arise. 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years experience Producing feature film or high end episodic VFX. 
  • A demonstrated track record of delivering high quality VFX on time and within budget. 
  • Well-versed in budgeting, scheduling, and managing multiple external vendors working in parallel with internal VFX teams. 
  • Experience producing photo-real VFX, particles and dynamics, CG characters, and motion graphics in an integrated pipeline. 
  • Must be a team player and work well under tight deadlines.
