MSG is looking for a Playback & Test Systems Senior Director to join a groundbreaking content creation and playback team based in Los Angeles. As the content delivery studio for the MSG Sphere projects, we strive to create world-class content at an unprecedented scale on the largest LED screens ever made.

The Playback & Test Systems Sr. Director oversees a team with a multi-stage mission: an initial research and discovery phase to establish the optimum architectures and frameworks for Sphere content playback, and a second phase focused on the setup, testing, and integration of all hardware required for Sphere content creation and final exhibition. This role involves staffing, scheduling, and tasking the Playback team – guiding their efforts and documenting the resulting protocols and deliverable specifications for capture and post production teams creating show content. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to create interim milestones and outcomes in the fulfillment of over-arching project goals and deadlines. Candidates should also have experience in the architecting of multi-screen, projection mapped, and/or large-scale content playback, with deep knowledge of media server and image warping workflows.

A successful candidate for this position will know how to present solutions at an executive level and create best practices for new platforms and technologies as well as understand the value of engaging external technology partners across hardware, software and cloud infrastructure to deliver necessary solutions.

Specific Functions/Activities Summary

  • Define and oversee playback and testing project scopes, budgets, staffing, schedules, estimates, and technical needs for MSG Sphere Playback systems.
  • Establish and lead staff of Test Systems engineers, Playback Producers and Audio Technicians across simultaneous productions.
  • Establish and present at an executive level on matters such as resolution, color, and 3D geometric processing.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software suppliers to establish playback solutions.
  • Maintain and operate MSG test suites, workshops and other testing facilities.
  • Introduce proven hardware technology solutions and specifications ensuring the highest level of production quality to deliver content to MSG locations ensuring maximum efficiency.
  • Maintain a deep technical understanding of past & present playback techniques including media servers, high speed networking, SAN’s, GPU’s LED processors and signal flow.
  • Determine project risk and insurance needs for both the company as a whole and as it applies to specific projects.
  • Identify and develop industry leading playback technologies and futures.
  • Work with Capture, VFX, Color, Audio, Pipeline, IT, and I/O teams and other department leads to determine appropriate capture and post production technologies and techniques.
  • Create documentation to support specific, repeatable delivery workflows and best practices for content creators engaged in creating content for Sphere.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of previous experience managing teams running live event media playback or similar role.
  • Experience with multi-canvas, large format content playback as system architect or in a similar management role.
  • Expert knowledge of playback workflows, pipelines and project management from concept to final delivery.
  • 7th Sense experience required, Disguise, Pandora, or Hippo experience a plus.
  • Experience collaborating with content creators, live event producers, and other creative departments.
  • A confident, professional, and persuasive communication style with senior leaders and team members.
  • A passion for creative problem-solving and strategic thinking.
  • Ability to remain flexible and calm in high-pressure situations and adjust as multiple moving parts consistently change
  • Ability to present to executive and creatives alike with skills to distill complex knowledge and techniques into effective summaries.
  • Ability to set goals and coach high performance teams.
  • Fiscal acumen with ability to develop and manage capex and opex budgets and determine justifications for spending requests.
