Head of 2D

Description

FuseFX has an opening in New York! We have opportunities at our studio for an experienced and talented Head of 2D with a background in television and/or feature film VFX to join our creative team.

The Head of 2D oversees the scheduling, workflow, and overall creative success of the 2D department, including personally working on the box themselves and troubleshooting problems on a regular basis. The Head of 2D represents the 2D team to a diverse group of internal clients, managing the team’s workload, priorities, and client expectations.

 

FuseFX is an Emmy-award winning visual effects and animation studio focused on producing photo-real digital effects for feature film, episodic television, and commercials.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Supervision/Department Management

  • Facilitate and attend regular Production and Resource meetings to stay abreast of hiring and staffing needs; plan and balance 2D resources across all projects
  • Attend regular Dept. Head Meeting with Senior Management to inform of current departmental activities
  • Schedule and lead meetings with Compositing Supervisors to keep everyone abreast of issues and changes in the department and listen to feedback 
  • Participate in regular calls with Head of 2D personnel at other facilities to share information with the intention to consider the department a “global” department
  • Manage and directly schedule Comp Supervisors and DFX Supervisors to projects
  • Regularly “check-in” and “walk the floor” to keep in tune with Compositors
  • Manage personnel and conflict issues among team, determine the course of action for underperforming or problem artists and work with Prod Management on artist assignments
  • Manage employee tasks such as reviewing and approve time sheets for payroll, conducting employee performance reviews and make requests for salary increases
  • Oversee artist assessment system at local facility and make suggestions on updates
  • Coordinate with 2d pipeline developers on tools and procedures; advise and approve future 2D tools
  • Manage recruitment for department including partnering with recruitment to create a hiring strategy and conduct necessary interviews, keep accurate records of 2D applicants for future resource needs
  • Make hiring recommendations and advise and negotiate rates for hiring 
  • Interpret data in system and make recommendations for artist’s improvement and growth
  • Maintain good communication and relations with software vendors, Assess training needs and coordinate tutorials from vendors
  • Create regular internal training; assess artist skill sets and suggest areas for improvement
  • Assist in bidding and reviewing bids when needed; advise efficient 2D techniques to keep bids competitive and reduce unnecessary production needs
  • Keep open communication with clients and request materials as needed
  • Advise clients on shooting methods for efficient effects integration

 

 Traits of a successful FuseFX Head of 2D:

·       10+ years in 2D; comfortable leading Compositing teams ideally in an episodic environment

·       Highly proficient in Nuke – able to both lead a department and jump in “on the box” as needed

·       Diverse capabilities of the principles of 2D such as: roto, keying, painting

·       Role model in conflict resolution and ability to provide insight into complex situations for their team

·       Highly organized individual who enjoys the creative process and managing a department/ team
